Happened on the very first play of the game and I counted at least 3 more. Do they not have to allow us a chance to change personnel if they run a guy on late?

TV commentators mentioned how upset Butch was over that exact issue, plus other very poorly managed aspects of the game by the officials.

So did they comment on it or did the refs just refuse to call it?

Jancek had a tough night, but the bs on the first play of the game shouldn't be allowed. They line up in a formation with no TE so we are in a set defense. Then they run a TE in and as we are making the adjustments, they snap the ball. They tried to sneak a player in late on the play clock later in the game as well.
We still didn't do a damn thing right in the first quarter on D and Kiffin picked us apart but that first play of the game was bull****.

When 2-3 plays a game can change the out come of the game what makes anyone think 2-3 blown calls won't? Its pretty bad when a Bama fan your watching the game with says he has seen more poor officiating when watching Tenn then any other sec team.

The officials get worse every year in all aspects. Its as if the game is too fast for them or they are waiting on replay to bail them out.

I was at the game screaming about the same thing. It was my thought that bringing in an additional player when not in a huddle was illegal. I do not know if you could see it on TV, but it confused the heck out of us on the first play of the game.

Offense lines up, defense adjusts, then someone runs in from the offense at the last second. It is the same as having a heavy formation set to the left, defense adjusts, then a wr steps onto the field on the right sideline at the last second.

It is an offensive tactic used by Alabama. No penalty for breaking huddle with 10...and if you can sneak the 11th on without notice, inside/outside the numbers...

Happened at least a handful of times.

That's exactly what they pulled on the first TD pass. They broke with 10, ran a guy on late and screwed up the coverage.

They're going to have to tweak that rule.

And you know they planned it knowing the D would be misaligned. Totally bs.

Kesling's crew definitely took notice 2-3 times early 2 qtrs. Once I heard their concern, I realized Kiffin was behind it -- it worked. Maggit and Sutton have already said they didn't recognize the scheme/D must (will) work on better communication:

“That definitely affected us because we already had guys lined up,” linebacker Curt Maggitt said.
“But like I said, communication wise, we just have to do a better job of communicating.”
Maggitt said he didn’t see the player walk onto the field until the “last second.” Sutton never saw him at all.
“I didn’t see him come on the field,” he said. “I just saw the guys that were on the field. We put our call in and lined up to the call. We just had guys in the wrong spot.
“Lack of communication. They made us pay for it. Great teams make us pay for mistakes that we have.”

if it's not a rule violation then I would reckon that's called good coaching. Seems pretty shady but that fits with who orchestrated it.

when the offense subs, the ref is supposed to hold play, stand over the ball and allow defense to adjust or sub accordingly.

I guess forcing a fumble by grabbing the facemask against Ole Miss is ok, their was obvious holding on bummer's first offensive play for a TD downfield last night, Terrence Cody throwing his helmet off during a live play after blocking a FG vs UT. #4 using both hands to push one of our guys, and then we get called for unsportsmanlike the very next play. I can keep digging and find more, these just come to mind.

This thread may be oldish, but I just had to chime in.

I'm freakin' furious about the reffing on the first play of the game. But not only that, the first play of the second half (about a 30 yard pass play) was also an illegal play by Bama. They absolutely broke the huddle with 12 players, one of which ran off the field.

Jones was screaming at the refs about that one, too. No matter. They could have cared less. Bunch of cheaters. Period.
