Just got back from Montana...

Good for them being optimistic. Hopefullly they travel well and deal with dissapointment even better. It should be a better prep game than UT Martin leading into a decent opponent in Cincy. I hope the midget Grizzlies give our team a good quarter of tuff nosed ball to get this season started right. I also hope we blow it open like c4 on a panel door though after the 1st.

I have watched them a few times and then watched some video posted here that I had not seen. They do not have close to enough speed or talent to compete with UT unless the Vols choke huge. They shouldn't have a receiver open all day.

It would probably be the best thing that could happen to our young Vol team. I hope montana comes out fired up and tries to punch our o-line and d-line right in the mouth.

A little initial shock is never a bad thing. It gets the guys back into the groove that much quicker.

Not me. I would like the "shock" to be that those guys go out and smash Montana like a bug... that we're talking about the DL being better than we thought because no one else gets to make a tackle.

I just want a good quarter out of MT doesn't mean I don't what our boys to own them.

Opening games are always tough because each team has a lot of enthusiasm and high expectations for a great season. I expect Montana will play well for the first 15-25 minutes of the game but in the end the size, speed and athleticism of the Vols will overwhelm the Grizzlies. I just hope none of our (or their) players suffer any major injuries.

Go Vols !!!

Hey VolNation--I was just in Missoula, Montana for a little over two weeks. I found it very interesting to listen to and talk to Montana folk about the upcoming game. After listening to the radio personalities for days saying things like, "We are going to go down and show those hillbillies what real football is all about," I began asking people around campus and town. Guys, they genuinely think that they are going to come to Neyland and beat us. And they don't even think it will be a big deal.

I asked them why they thought that and they all said that based on their preseason ranking (supposedly #4 in I-AA) and our record the last 2-3 years, they are looking at this game as very winnable for them. Of course, I horse laughed and said that there will only be one Appalachian State-type of upset in this generation. But, they insisted that it wouldn't be that big of an upset.

And this is not just one random dude in a bar. This is 20-25 people that I talked with there about the game. Just thought that I would share.

V,B!

Ap State over Michigan was a much more significant upset than would be Montana over UT.

That being said, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

No it wasn't. App St was a better team that year than Montana is this year. UT is a better team than Michigan was that year... at least that's the way it looks now.

Montana is a highly ranked FCS team... but App St was better that year and far more athletic.

...Wyo played a dying football program and won....this football program is alive in every way.....

"Upset" is all about perception. The perception is that Ap State is a lowly cream puff and Michigan is, well, Michigan. UT does not have the respect that Michigan has and certainly most people, right or wrong, would think that Montana is at least as good as Ap State.

Not saying "they are right," but am saying that you are dreaming if you think that the college football world would react nearly the same to a Montana win as it did to the Ap State win. Not even close.

when did a D-IAA beat a historic team from a top-tier conference prior to that App/M game, tho? it was a big deal due to it not having happened in a while. it was also big due to how the game ended, and the national coverage it received as it was happening real-time... something you didn't have in years prior.

the prestige of the Jax State/Ole Miss and JMU/VT wasn't as big since there had recently been an upset like this.

I do not see any way their CB's can cover our WR's... JMO

added to that, I think Poole is going to have a very good day also.. bad news for Montana all the way around

I think MT will hold its own until late in the 2nd qtr. The flood gates will open in the 2nd half and UT will roll. The class of CDD will be the only thing keeping this game from getting truly ugly.

No, its because Michigan is viewed as a way better program than Ole Mis and VT. In fact, I think most people viewed the VT loss as basically simply proof of what we all already thought, which is that the ACC was the weakest of the major conferences.

If Montana beats UT, it would be noticed, but not talked about for more than a few days.

Heck, if FAU beats Florida, the story would be half how far Florida has fallen so fast and then kudos to Schnellenberger. Not even it would have the legs of an ApState beating Michigan.

VT would dominate M... and every year since the M loss to App.

By your FL-FAU logic, the same should have applied for App-M; that M had fallen so fast.

Wrong on both accounts. App St is consistently one of the best FCS teams with a history of very good players. "Michigan is, well, Michigan?" UT has a comparable record over the last 10 years without the benefit of about 4 Vandy's on their schedule- (Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and sometimes Purdue and/or NW.)

I really don't know of anyone who respects Michigan right now.

You bet. Do you work hard to be that way or does it just come natural?

Don't expect LG to EVER use logic that you can recognize or follow.

Obviously, you want to believe that UT is viewed with the same level of respect right now as Michigan and you are just flat out wrong.

Right now, Michigan doesn't have that much respect. That being said, at the time of the upset, Michigan was coming off a 2 loss season.

No way this upset would be considered nearly as big as that one was at the time.

This.

I believe Michigan was ranked #5 at the time of the game. That is why it was such a big upset. An FCS team beat the #5 ranked BCS team.

If Montana were to pull off the upset it wouldn't get near the national press that game did because UT is unranked. It would be about the same as Jax State beating Ole Miss.
