What happened between them?

I knew that something happened between one of the coaches and Smith, but I didn't ever hear who it was or what happened. Do we have anymore details?

Just the word I have been hearing...

Bottom line, the sooner this gets resolved the better. It is a distraction and not good pub.

Mike Strange wrote in his article tonight that North Texas is advertising an opening for a Strength coach on its website, as of June 17th(tonight). So, signs are pointing that Ausmus will be the guy, soon.

And I can agree with that to a certain extent, but I think guys that had been led thru an off-season program that paid attention to the little things and was heavy on discipline (which I'll tell you wasn't the case in the later Long years) would have been much quicker on the uptake in the Clawfense.

Detail and discipline are two of the most important things that separate mediocre from great. A great player that plays without discipline will never be more than mediocre. A player with less talent that does everything right and busts it every day will outplay his talent level.

It all starts in the offseason. A player doesn't loaf in the weight room, then turn it on when camp opens in the fall.

Fulmer thought that they could, and overlooked the problems in the S&C program. "Just make them ready for Saturday," was what he always said. Ultimately, that lack of discipline bled over to practice and games, and now we have a new head football coach.

That's really well said and why Fulmer isn't here anymore... he got sloppy and undisciplined and it showed from the practices to the weight training.

Long was a really good and highly respected strength coach. From everything that I have heard from fellow associates in the business is that things got to lax and stale per say, much like other aspects of the program. I hear that he is in New Orleans or Baton Rouge now running Sports Performance center. At one time he was a significant investor in D1 Sports, which is owned by former Vol Will Bartholomew.

Smith was too controversial and did not pick his battles wisely. You can't clash with Orgeron, then Kiffin, then Hamilton. Not very smart.

Ausmus, like a previous post mentioned, is going to come in and run a similar style of program as TN players have seen in the past. What will make is different is going to be the intensity and accountability. From everything that I have heard recently, Ausmus was the #1 choice of Kiffin and O, but they received some misinformation that he had already accepted a job with Sarkisian. Likewise, Sarkisian wanted to hire Ausmus, but had received the exact opposite misinformation. Someone royally screwed the pooch and both programs pulled the trigger on their #2 options.

Motivation aside, when grown men that signed up to play Tennessee football can't hunker down and just beat Northern Illinois and Wyoming off the line with brute force, something is terribly wrong.

I know he probably wouldn't have taken the pay cut and done it but Will Bartholomew would have made a great S&C coach. He already runs a top-notch training facility that helps send kids to the pros. He was a captain at UT so he has some school spirit and the necessary background. It would be some sort of recruiting pitch to essentially have a professional training service as part of the football team

So as of right now we do not have a strength and condition coach?

We have not had a S&C coach since ealry May. The relationship was shot at that point and the wheels in motion to replace the previous S&C coach. Reality si, agreement with Ausmus eas reached in mid-May but nothing could be said until Smith issue resolved and job posted (which couldn't happen until job was open).

Ausmus has been a done deal for over a month..

Will couldn't afford the pay cut.
