Just a Rumor: Newton/UT (merged)

Lane Kiffin was a rule bender, but he wasn't a major rule breaker. He picked up some secondary violations.

There were reasons Tennessee backed off Newton and "he didn't fit the system" wasn't one.

All I'll say is that when Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron are concerned about a kid's character and ethics, you've got an issue.
I don't believe that wasn't a reason at all.

I suspect that, indeed, was the primary reason, but agree that it might not have been the only one. Kiffin has said that was the issue and he also clearly asked Tahj Boyd to find somewhere else to sign for that reason. Kiffin and USC ('dream school' and where he cut his teeth) use a drop-back, pro style QB exclusively and Cam Newton just isn't that.

I can imagine that character issues could have played a role, but haven't seen anything that suggests Kiffin is at all open to changing the system significantly to fit the QB in the manner that would have made sense with Newton.

Boyd and Newton both had Dads that wanted to run the show.

That was why some schools weren't interested in Boyd.

Heard on a local radio show in North Mississippi this morning that Cam Newton's father mentioned that UT was the first to offer "pay for play". This was the first time I heard and have not been able to find any info about it. Anyone else heard this?

I heard it also, the guest host was from Birmingham and one of his on air guests was a bammer that played for Stallings. Made me think it was his hoping the Vols and AU were both in trouble. I thought it was really odd that this was the first time I heard UT dragged into this mess. He stated we started the bidding at 150k.

I was beginning to think I was the only one who listened to that show. It's not a great show, but it's all we have around this area.

I wouldn't be a bit suprised if Kitten and crew did it...

I just hope they weren't stupid enough to offer someone cash for Matt Sims..
I want a refund if they did...:)

Kiff didn't want Cam. He wanted a traditional drop back QB. Lane is somewhat racist-----he has never gone after a black QB----MOF--told one committed to UT (Boyd) to look elsewhere. LK wants to be totally in charge----and he doesn't want a guy improvising. Lane also has aspirations of returning to the Pro game, therefore runs strictly a pro offense. UT offered no money to Cecil.

Didn't he recruit Scroggins?

not that kiffin has any more credibility than cecil newton, but here is an article quoting clk on the subject:

Nov. 11--Lane Kiffin is a long way from Southeastern Conference country, watching from afar as the Cam Newton saga unfolds at Auburn.

As Tennessee's coach, Kiffin recruited Newton when the Florida transfer was playing in junior college. Kiffin, hired by USC in January, said the quarterback and his father made an unofficial visit to Knoxville.

"We didn't offer him a scholarship, which doesn't make me look very smart, but we did talk to him," Kiffin said Wednesday. "We just went in a different direction. He was a very exciting player that wasn't necessarily a perfect system fit for what we were doing, but we knew he would be great in other systems."

The controversy surrounding Newton, a Heisman Trophy frontrunner, began last week. ESPN and the New York Times reported that a former Mississippi State player said a person claiming to represent the Newton family had sought money from the school to land the quarterback.

Asked if the Newtons, or someone claiming to represent the family, ever said money would be required for Tennessee to sign Newton, Kiffin said, "No."

Kiffin said his experience in the football-crazy SEC -- "You hear so many things down there" -- gave him a unique perspective.

"I remember so many things said about me that weren't accurate," Kiffin said. "It was a good lesson learned. If something comes on the radio or in print, I don't think there are any facts to it at all until someone shows some proof. This is a perfect example."

:birgits_giggle:Hey now, that makes a man a racists....Forgive me, but I think he wanted Scroggins more than any other QB he recruited....You silly...man!:eek:lol:

I don't believe it to be true, but if I were going to discuss "illegal" payments with someone, it would make sense to keep that person off the "official prospects" list. Jus sayin, its called covering your arse. Again, I don't believe it, but it wouldn't surprise me @ this point, knowing LK + Co.

Not really, that is the opposite of what they would do. They would MAKE SURE to have already offered him a schollie. Otherwise, when they 'suddenly' offered, it would look suspect.

Jus sayin, its called covering your arse.

By the time this is over, there will be a rumor that everyone who talked to him offered him some money to pay to play. I wouldn't put any stock in this.

The reason there is reason to put stock in the Auburn rumors, before Cecil fessed up, is MSU people were going on record saying it happened with Auburn months prior to Cam Newton getting under center in an Auburn uniform.

MSU would have thrown us under the bus at the same time if they had the kind of information they did on Auburn.

"I remember so many things said about me that weren't accurate," Kiffin said.

This quote is really the best in the entire thread...:lolabove:

Seriously, though, our man Cecil has been hunkered down trying to figure a way out of this. I have to wonder why he'd volunteer (sorry for the pun) these sort of negotiations with another school when he hasn't admitted to the current accusations. Makes no sense...

Let's go back to Kiffin's quote. All you guys in VN should be ashamed of yourselves...questioning Lane's integrity and honesty like you have. Poor guy...

Local espn sports talk in Chattanooga (Nick Bonsanto) is reporting Lane Kiffin offered C.N $100k. Says that Miss St offered $150k and Auburn offered $200k. FWIW he is a true Vol hater.

Did he also report Kiffin never extended him a scholarship? Freaking morons, if you're going to make some crap up at least check your facts.
