Did the Browns Front Office Break Up Over Greg Schiano?

Haslam has been pulling the strings for years. Schiano is Haslam's guy and Haslam has an unbelievably bad track record when it comes to football hires. He's the #1 reason why we keep getting incompetent ADs and incompetent coaches.

These bits from the article are particularly telling:

[Former Cleveland Browns CEO Joe] Banner wanted nothing to do with Schiano. Haslam was intrigued with him after the over-the-top recommendation from Belichick. The group flew to Tampa to interview Schiano, and one source said Banner was cold to Schiano, not participating much in the interview. Banner likely thought Schiano would be a disastrous hire, given all the negatives in recent Cleveland history. He was probably right, but the owner was open to it, and when the owner's open to it, the man running football operations should at least consider it.

Which makes you wonder why Haslam waited so long to pull the trigger on Banner, especially since the two appear to have clashed multiple times during the coaching hunt. The Plain Dealer says that Banner was high on Seahawks DC Dan Quinn, and wanted to wait until after the Super Bowl to try and bring him aboard; the paper implies that Haslam unilaterally hired Mike Pettine, a move Banner was against.

In other words, Joe Banner wanted to hire the guy who would eventually take the Atlanta Falcons to the Super Bowl. Jimmy Haslam wanted to either hire a mediocre defensive coordinator (Mike Pettine) who went 3-13 last season or the guy who just failed miserably at Tampa Bay (going 4-12 in his 2nd season) and was known as one of the worst NFL coaches of all-time.

Not surprised that the Haslams had past association with Schiano. I'm kind of surprised no one saw this backlash coming. Fans need to press their advantage and take the trash out of that athletic department.
