Just a QB away from a completely different situation.

I know for a fact that Maurer was not considered a “project”. Idk where some people are getting that from but he was recruited by Helton to take JGs job, as a freshman. It’s understandable that you may ASSUME he was a project because he was recruited so late but that has a LOT to do with the fact that he was underrated and “lost in the mix”. But no Elite 11 qbs are “projects”. They’re considered elite within their class. But all that being said, so was JG and it’s no secret that he’s a project if we’ve ever seen one.
Actually if we’re being honest he was a high 4* after his performance at the Opening. Hence the term “underrated”. He just never got his bump in the rankings because he signed early in Jan and the next update wasn’t until Feb of 2019. The reason he was a 3* was because of the team he played for being so bad. No one knew how he’d perform against other “elite” athletes until he made the Elite 11 and showed out at the Opening. He was guaranteed a major bump into the top 5 of his class.

He was a three star period. Not one person ever thought he was being recruited to take JG's job. Just DEVELOP behind him and hopefully be ready in a couple years. He was always a potential player. No one thought he would come in and challenge for the starting job.

Then HB came and passed him up. An actual high rated qb.

If Helton thought that at all then no wonder we ran him out of town. His terrible evaluation of qbs was the main reason he was forced out.

Calling JG a project but not Maurer a career 45% passer with a career qb rating of 97.7? lmao

Unless you believe that other position groups are not playing to their potential because they know we don't have the right QB, there is a lot more wrong with this team than one position.

I've seen this more than once. A team's play can tend to rise or fall to the level of QB play. I heard an interview with a former player after the Arkansas loss that made this very point. I can't remember who it was.

UT is getting zero on its investment on QB development. How much are we paying Pruitt, Chaney, and the QB coach? Not to have a QB is unacceptable and a fireable offense. If the AD can't fix this then he needs to be gone also.

No need in piling on JG, he is what he is. It’s a recruiting, then a development issue. JP needs to not sleep until he finds an elite HS, JUCO, or a transfer portal QB for the 2021 season. I don’t think he’ll survive next season without one.
If I was a QB and Tenn came knocking at my door, Id tell them which way the highway was. CJP or someone has showed its all about seniority up there.

It’s. It a QB issue. We have 3 QB’s in scholarships right now. It’s a coaching issue that can’t develop the QB’s that we recruit including a 5* #3 pro QB in country. HB could have gone to any school he wanted to and picked us. We just don’t have anyone on staff that is smart enough to play to his talents or develop him.

If CJP had made a move after the UGA game regarding quarterbacks, then it would have been repairable. Once the third quarter debacle against KY unfolded, it became a problem much broader revolving around loss of trust in the coaching staff by a large number of the team IMO. The root problem or trigger was JG. The failure of CJP to deal with it effectively created much larger problems that will take a long time to undo, if ever. It festered and went septic and remains such.

Bailey will be really good. He just needs coaching at this level. Our QB coach sucks. Phil needs to talk Peyton into doing the job.

Cool. So we get a new QB and all of a sudden the defense can defend slants, generate a pass rush, learn how to tackle, defend WRs and the coaching staff will learn how to make second half adjustments???

Wow. Who knew that a team sport only rests on a QB 🙄

Once HB has a spring training and not be in contact tracing protocol where he misses almost all of fall training camp then I think that you will see a great difference in him. You have to have those practices because it is a HUGE JUMP between High School and College football.

I tend to agree with you...on Offense. However, that doesn't explain why the defense suddenly can't stop a simple slant and has been getting bitch-slapped in the 3rd quarter. I'm sure some of it is the offense leaving them on the field too long and in bad field position, but that can't possibly be all of it.

It's a collective failure. Derrick Ansley is just as clueless as Pruitt. These guys are OVC level. They are so behind programs like Bama... Georgia..and Florida it's ridiculous. Plus...they are being led by a head coach who I suspect Is literally at least mildly retarded. A rudderless ship being captioned by Beldar Slingblade.

We are bad everywhere. QB play makes a bad team look worse. I don know if Peyton reincarnated could cover our defensive issues and lack of speed

lol! It does make you wonder. Just in Monday's presser:

"He done good for us"

"The defense done good in the first half"

"We have to get the throw game going better"

Who.the.****. says "throw game", let alone an SEC HC! Jezuz H Christ

QB recruiting is always ahead. For example this season we are recruiting our 2022 qb. So it’s hard to blame him too much for BM or JS being subpar and his last qb was 5 stars. Salter is a high 4 star.

I think he’s addressing the issue but qb recruiting takes a big longer than other positions because it’s a year ahead of other positions in terms of when they commit.

This is true, but it's also true that they told Michael Penix to take a hike back in 2018. The same Michael Penix who now runs the offense for the #10 in the country, the Indiana Hoosiers, with key wins over Penn State and Michigan. While Butch 100% deserved to be fired in 2017, his QB recruiting that year was pretty good (if only he'd landed a serviceable QB between 2013 and 2017).

Maurer certainly needs development, but I wouldn't go so far as to say he was a "project". Shrout was; Maurer put up very impressive numbers his Senior season. I still think he has the potential to be very good, but he's got to get control of his own demons.

Pruitt needs to fire Weinke immediately for malfeasance. How Mauer or Shrout aren’t better prepared is crazy. They would be starting on ACC teams or AAC teams, they should not be completely lost out there.

We have a QB in Bailey that has all the making of an elite QB, but need experience. I say take our lumps and let him play.

I should not be this nervous of our QB play in year 3 of Pruitt. Just crazy we are at this point.

As people have seen on the other threads, I am not a fan of another coaching search right now, but this is kind of ridiculous.

True. However, if we answer the first score of Arky with one of our own, the momentum returns to us. We didn’t because we can’t. Defense lost their focus because of it. It is a team game and our offense is letting the defense down, then they cannot play and as others have said it spirals down. Personally I am ready for the youngsters. Perfect time for free experience with no impact on their eligibility.

I completely agree - this season has been a perfect a perfect storm of everyone thinking our 5th year senior qb would be much improved and is not - all qb backups have not been given the time to be ready secondary to covid and health issues - and no matter what success we have in the first half of all our games - the opposing team makes adjustments for the second half and we play into their hands doing the same things in the second half just like our opposing team wants and they shut us down - putting our defense out there time and time again until they are exhausted - we need a better qb and we need a second half offensive plan different than the first half!! so the opposing team can not key on their adjustments like they have done every game

What are you doing next weekend?

We have no senior leadership and that hurts as well. I thought I would bring that up because nobody else has. It helps to have seniors that can and are vocal about it. We need to recruit more natural leaders. I see Henry T being that kind of leader, we need a few more to step out from under the shell. And of course fix the others reasons such as qb etc. GBO!
