Just a joke?

That was barely more robbery than little Jimmy stealing little Johnny's lunch money.

Once the victim started talking about how he never felt like there was any risk he'd be shot, and that they told the players they had some cheeseburgers, and that he wanted to see them stay on the team, it became impossible to take this robbery very seriously.

I'm not saying they don't need to be kicked off the team, but man. The whole thing was weak.

Yes, very weak. Utterly embarrassing. But unfortunately, no matter how the whole thing pans out, all the casual bystanders across the nation will remember is "3 Tennessee football players attempt armed robbery." The court of public perception has set forth its ruling.

Kind of makes a good case for curfew... at least for freshmen.

Here is the kind of joke that is. Several years ago, i lived in downtown Atlanta. I had taken a friend to dinner that night and stopped on the way back to my apartment for lottery tickets at a store like our Pilots. It was 1:00 AM and we were standing at the counter paying for tickets. I noticed a guy come in behind us and was wandering around. As i took out my money to pay the clerk, i heard a loud click and the guy behind my friend say... open the register.

I looked back to see the guy had a 357 pointed at the clerk to the side of my friend. A couple of seconds passed as i slipped my hand into my jacket and drew my gun. i turned and shot the jerk twice in the side. The clerk screamed and said....he is the security guard.

I being confused as heck asked her what she meant. She said he worked the store as security and was always pulling this so called joke. 1 hour later, after 20 cops, and one ambulance. i had to drive to APD and spend several hours being interviewed by detectives.

The guy lived after 3 weeks in the hospital. It took a couple of days to clear the whole mess up with the police. My friend was totally freaked for months. There are no good jokes involving weapons. :shakehead:

Suppose Pilot will change its training program on when to call the police? Will the Pilot clerk be Employee of the Month or dismissed? How ironic that Tennessee's largest football contributor, monetarily; employs the person that called the police resulting in one of the most embarassing moments for the program. BTW, the clerk did the right thing.

So two football players -- one wearing his team's gear -- try to rob three broke stoners at a gas station with a pellet gun. The guys are broke, but they offer them cheeseburgers instead. The football players make off in a Prius.

I think the reason people keep wondering if this was a prank is because it was either that or the absolute worst, crappiest, least gangster-like crime of all time. Some pasty white prep-school kids in their Mom's Volvo could probably have done a better job. This is the most flaccid armed robbery of all time.

When you put it that way, we have only heard one side of the story so far... and its the kids from Maryville. How do we really know what they are saying is true? Offering cheeseburgers to someone with a gun?!? It really does sound like they were stoned.

If it was a joke, it was as funny as if one of the victims had a carry permit and shot both of them.

That's what I was thinking. This could have been a lot less funny than it already was(n't). I don't know about carry laws in Tennessee; but you don't even have to have a carry permit in Georgia... anybody can carry their gun around with them in their car in Georgia, because it's considered an extension of your home. I can pretty much guarantee if that kind of joke had happened anywhere in and around Atlanta, they'd all be dead today; and nobody would be discussing what Kiffin or the state was going to be doing to them as punishment.

Same thing happened at Alabama Saban’s first year. Jeremy Elder robbed someone with a pellet gun, and he was immediately kicked off the team. Since Saban cleaned house his first they have gone undefeated, coincidence?

There's something deeply weird about what happened the other night. Two guys randomly deciding to jack the guys in the next car while their buddy was in the quickie mart; the victim talking the next day about cheeseburgers and how he hopes that they get to stay on the team. The guy who had a gun pointed in his face at point-blank range saying that he never felt threatened. We're unlikely to ever find out exactly how it went down, obviously, but the whole thing just smells odd.

I will say this -- given the fact that the weapon was a pellet gun, that nothing was taken, and all the stuff the victim has been saying to the press, I don't see any way they're going to convict these guys of much unless the players' lawyer is a complete bonehead. If Cheeseburger Guy's testimony is the foundation of your case, you haven't got much to go on.

You're absolutely right. This is not a cut and dry case.

In light of everything going on, I'm wondering if this was more of a joke then an actual hold-up. (if this has already been posted I apologize). Think about it. Of all reports Nuke and Mike approached the car, and lethargically demanded money while brandishing a pellet gun. The victims in the car even stated "I knew they weren't going to be violent because of the tone of their voice, they just asked for the money and when they realized we didn't have it they left." Usually when you're getting car jacked they take SOMETHING right? Also, they said that the girl was just laughing like it was a joke.

If I had to guess I would assume they were showing off trying to be baddazzez for this chick.. for whatever reason. Like a UT athlete needs to work to get women!?

Thoughts?
Well, if they were trying to impress a chick, she should have been much hotter. IJS

When I was 10 or 11, a friend and I were shooting our bb guns in our neighborhood. We walked up the street to a gas station to get a coke, and there was a Wells-Fargo truck there. We thought it would be funny to say "stick em up"! The armed guards did not think so, as they exited the truck with machine guns in hand. I think I peed a little! Lesson learned.
