Vols linebacker Colton Jumper — a former walk-on from The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn. — was granted a redshirt from his first season with the program in 2014 — and will again be listed as a junior in 2017. Multiple program sources confirmed the news to GoVols247, and Jumper's status has been changed on Tennessee's official roster.

Tennessee’s defense just got a huge boost for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

According to 247Sports, LB Colton Jumper has been granted an extra year of eligibility, as his first year with the Vols in 2014 has been re-classified as a redshirt season.

Therefore, this fall, Jumper will only be a redshirt junior instead of a senior.

That’s a big deal for defensive coordinator Bob Shoop’s unit, as Jumper played a key role in 2016 when starter Darrin Kirkland Jr. missed some time with an injury.

Jumper filled in and had 61 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not jumper 😭 why can't they grant Danny O'Brian a probation/medical redshirt and AJ Johnson a 7th year redshirt?!😭

When Jumper first got here it was obvious he was a little behind athletically. That being said he has made major improvements. Still wouldnt want him starting, but he is really good for depth. He balled out against UF.

Surely he will be granted a redshirt. Aren't they eligible for redshirt if they played like less than 6 quarters or something like that?

No. A single play burns a redshirt.

He may qualify for a hardship waiver due to season ending injury though, which some refer to as a medical redshirt

Gotcha thanks for the clarification. I knew I have seen a lot of players that have played be granted a redshirt. Maybe he will get one. We need him and any other capable DT for as long as possible.

Yes, a player can be granted a medical redshirt if he played less than 30% of the games before suffering a season ending injury.

Could Tuttle be granted one?

Don't see how. He was injured in the South Carolina game.

The Medical Hardship waiver rules require that the injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season and the athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

Is there a medical waiver available if a player suffers a season-ending injury in more than 1 season? I can't remember, but it seems like they added something like this before one of the past seasons.

But didn't he miss several games at the beginning of the season?

that rules has been around forever. it is the rule that is being used to get Jumper a 6th year. if you miss 2 or more seasons due to injury you can appeal to NCAA for a 6th year
