judging by the empty seats...

I'm fine with the students deciding to go home or elsewhere for the holiday... my problem is season ticket holders selling their seats to KY FANS.. over in our section of "T" it had plenty, and two drunks behind us of which one had the filthiest mouth ever and made derrogatory remarks about our majorettes... I don't understand why someone would donate that much money to sit on that side of the field and sell off to the other team- I'd rather burn mine as to do that... so it isn't only the students, the big bucks are in other sections..... we were surronded by blue and that just isn't right..... so I'd cut the students some slack...

GO VOLS......
GO BIG ORANGE .........:salute:

According to this, almost 85% of students are from Tennessee.

and according to this

http://thecreports.state.tn.us/CountyPDF/Knox.pdf

Over 6,000 students enrolled at UT are from Knox County ALONE.

To think that most students aren't from the east Tennessee area is ridiculous. You may have more friends in dorms and such from other areas, but you have to remember people living in ET most likely commute.

About 30,000 students... 6,000 from Knox county... another 4,000(being very generous) from the rest of east tn... and that still only ends up being 10,000 students... that means 15000 are from mid and west tn and about another 5000 from out of state.

where you doing your 20 page paper and lab final during that 4 hours?

you're kidding? I can't believe I'm gonna say this because I would much rather attend a football game than do homework, and probably would have made that choice if I had been in Knoxville. BUT students are at UT to go to school and get an education. I am assuming you are not a student so I am a little disgusted that you would make the implication that school work is less important than football.

and I think you meant "were". perhaps you should have spent more time studying.

For what it's worth, and usage of where and were aside, I don't think he implied that football is more important than school. He simply questioned whether or not you were working on school work during those 4 hours, or if the majority of the day was spent watching football and hanging out.

I, along with the other 26,000 or so UT students frequently used the "I've got so much work I can't go to __________" excuse when I didn't really want to do something. There's always time to do school work, it's just a choice of doing it early and doing the fun stuff, doing the fun stuff and doing it late, or letting it hang over your head all weekend while you lie to yourself that you'll get started after this tv show, this game, after lunch, after this other show, after a break, after time to get your thoughts together, after dinner, after family guy, after some adult swim, afte you go get Starbucks, oh it's 2am...I'd better start"

If homework were actually being done during the game/game-day, good job. If not, I think the poster's question is valid.

Actually, yes, I was outlining my paper and watching the game. It was actually a short story due in creative writing so it took a lot of time and preparation.

Even if I wasn't working on the assignment I wouldn't have been happy had I got sick at the game.

And this is coming from a guy who went to the Florida game in 2006 with pneumonia and a 101-102 degree fever. I just didn't think that endangering the grades was worth it.

We get it dude...

You are the greatest UT football fan EVER in the History of UT Football and we are all not worthy to call ourselves fans because we (I am no longer a student, but I never once went to the UK game in my years at the Hill) didnt go to the UK game. After work today, I will go home and burn all my UT gear. I will tear up my check for the VASF 2008 donation, because my $$ isnt orange enough. In addition I will tear down my wifes and I diplomas off the walls of my office and throw them in the trash, all because we (dont live anywhere near ktown) never ever attened the UT vs UK game

glad to have you on board. everyone bask in the glory that is my fandom.

seriously, though, all the excuses for students not showing up will result in a decreased allotment. i wouldnt be very surprised if they shave off 3 or 4 thousand seats to offer up for sale. if anything, the increase in revenue will prevent ticket price increases for a while.

decreased demand by students will just lead to decreased supply. i will happily donate my money next year to pick up former student seats...primo sections.

They aren't going to shave seats off of the student section because there was a lack of students at the game for Kentucky.

And after this year's class graduates more students will be willing to pay for tickets seeing as they've never known another way. A lot of the juniors and seniors this year were reluctant to pay this year because they've never had to before. Now that there's a whole new class coming in next fall who don't care that they have to pay the seats should fill back up.

Up until this year I'd always seen the student section sold out, even when there were empty seats in the upper bowl. Up until this year, the students didn't have to pay. It's not that hard of a connection to make. There's just some cheap-arses and stubborn people in the student section.

On top of all of that, this was not an exciting year for Volunteer football anyway. And as sad as it is, there's not enough die hard fans in the student body to fill the section all the way up when the Vols aren't playing for a bowl berth. That Wyoming game really pissed a lot of students off and held as the last straw for the students coming to the game.

I agree with jwells, i went to UT for 5 years and only got to go home twice a year every year because i lived about 8 hours away, i could have easily gone home to be with family but i chose to go to the UK game every year home or away. I was embarrassed to see that many empty seats in the student section and was even given a hard time about it from friends that went to other schools about how fair-weather our students must be. I chose to go to the game because id see my family in barely 2 weeks afterward anyway. I'm not criticizing those that had legitimate excuses such as school work or sick grandparents to be with but I know not all of those empty seats had excuses to go along with them and just didn't go because they just didn't feel like it and those are the ones anyone who wears orange should feel embarrassed for when they see all that emptiness on tv.
