JP Prince vs Evan Turner

Yeah i follow college basketball pretty well. I also know that it took two overtime games in the big ten tournament to beat lesser teams. Hopson, Prince, and hell even Cam Tatum can guard this Turner guy. Sorry but big ten basketball aint **** if you ask me.

Turner would kill Hopson off the dribble and could just post up Tatum. He wouldn't consistently do either to Prince.

Prince is the only one on our current roster that could handle Turner one on one.

Turner will get his points. JP can do a decent job, but he got beat off the dribble quite a few times against Ohio. Cooper got into the lane against him many times. However, the Ohio guards are much smaller than Turner, so maybe a bigger guard will suit JP more, even if Turner can penetrate very well. I know I always hated matching up with a 5-9, 5-10 dude.

Our focus should really be to shut down Diebler, Lighty and Buford. Turner will find a way to 25 points, but what kills people are the dishes to spot up shooters and slashers. If we guard Diebler like Wake Forest did today, we're in serious trouble.

Diebler is the one that must be stopped. Let Turner do his best. It will be close and the guys will make him work. Especially Diebler must not be allowed to pull them out when they need him to get hot near the end.

I agree with that statement, but OSU played GT.

That's what I worry about for UT. They seem to regularly leave guys open for 3s in most of the games I watch and I don't see that changing with Turner drawing double teams.

We must have played some really bad shooting teams this year because I believe we are top 10 in the country in 3 point field goal percentage defense. I actually think we do a nice job of defending the three point line.

That's what meant, I must've had the Kentucky game on my mind at the time.

Just to add from a personal experience, my senior year we played a huge game for the bragging rights to top small school team in the state against a team that had a McDonald's AA (6-7, 235 PF with a 38 inch vertical, just ridiculous talent). My coach was dead set on stopping the guy that we doubled him the whole night to try and keep him from his 35 ppg average.

You know what the dude got that night? 35 points. Worse than that, he hit the guy we left unguarded enough times that we lost by 5. He was going to get his no matter what, but our 2-5 was better and we should've shut them down.

Anyway, the lesson I learned with one-man teams that day was to stop the "helpers". Turner can get 38 for all I care. What the others do around him will determine the game.

Prince will defend better against someone who dominates the ball. He tends to help too much when he's guarding someone who does not handle a lot. A great example is Saturday when Freeman was open quite a bit for three pointers.

What was the defense UT played against Ohio? Matchup zone--or just good switching on the ball screens up front. Whatever it was, it throttled Ohio: their guards, who tore up georgetown, could do nothing. Play that against osu--defend the three. JP can't guard Turner---not quick enuf.

Good point about Vols being ranked highly in 3 point fg % defense. However, this time Ohio State is shooting the ball.

Well, you have us there. Our stats over the course of 35 games can't match up with Ohio State's 28th ranked three point shooting skills.

I think Kansas is top 10 in 3 point shooting. I wonder how they shot the ball from 3 against UT.

I think Turner is most comparable to Devan Downey when looking at teams we’ve played. SC in general is pretty similar as they don’t really have a big man. Obviously, SC is no where as good as Ohio State.

Downey went off on us the first game, scoring 26, while we held him to only 15 in the second game. Does anyone know the adjustments we made?

I think we will be fine against Ohio State. I think Bruce is going to push the pace of this game since Ohio State is so thin. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Josh Bone get some more minutes as well. We will go with a small lineup.

50 is obviously an exaggeration, but if Prince gets in foul trouble, Turner will have a big day. No one else on the team has everything it takes to contain him without help.

Let Turner have his 50 and stop everyone else and we win.

Yeah I was just talking about the games I've seen this year which includes most of the losses. Obviously our 3pt defense wasn't as good in those games but they stand out more in my head.

Many OSU games I happened to watch this year, until recently, Diebler seemed to play like crap so maybe that happens Fri. I'm also not sure he can play 3 straight games at a high level.

I have seen both teams play a lot... Ohio State plays small, you won't be able to play Chism and Williams at the same time. OSU has 3 guys that can beat you off the dribble and a deadly 3 point shooter.

Prince could try and D up on Turner but hes going to get his 20-30 points no matter what. What Bruce should consider doing is picking up man to man full court and try force turnovers.

The key usually for OSU is Buford and Diebler. If they are hitting from deep you don't stand a chance. But if they are off, and you can get Lauderdale in some foul trouble you can pull off the upset
Look for full court press.

It's a defense called "ice" that is being used by many NBA teams. Basically your overplay the ball screens, even putting a man where the screened player will go before the screen is even set.
