Josh Smith....final play

Thought Butch said that Coach Z decided the receivers who would be in that play and their placement.

Remember when Josh Smith dropped all those balls his freshman year? My wife still calls him the dropper. He no longer deserves it but it's stuck in our family.... I do love to see a Knoxville boy have success for UT though.

I still call Arian Foster "Fumblin' Foster", even after he had some great NFL years. He's pretty unlikable so it's easier to keep pegging him with the nickname.

Another great thing to notice is what Croom does as the ball is coming down. He doesn't try to fight back to the ball (since that's not his job). Instead he lets his momentum take him into the UGA DB's and takes 3 Georgia players out of the play.

I noticed that as well, that made the play possible as much as the great throw. UGA had 6 defenders right there and Croom took 3 or possibly 4 out of the picture.

Its a kudos to the coaching staff that the players knew their job and executed it well on a game saving play. It's easy to think a hail Mary is just a Chuck and pray type play.

I think the original one was, then when it worked coaches started drawing it up and scheming it.

I usually don't question the coaching that much since they know a lot more than I do about foozeball; but it seemed curious to me that Smith was in on the Hail Mary play rather than a much bigger player such as Preston or Wolf. Maybe they were thinking Wolf was not fast enough, and Preston might drop the ball.

watch the replay from the back end of the play. its actually designed / run to perfection. if those guys in the back had swatted the ball forward he was positioned right in front to catch the batted ball. almost like a shortstop he could go after the ball if it went low. perfect execution by all the offense on that play, from the time the oline gave blocking, dobbs putting the air on it to get a jump ball and even if you look at malone on the single side dobbs could have forced a jumpball for him too.

Perhaps the call of the day was when TN called their timeout before the final TD. If one watches the replay, you can see Jennings was not out on the left side initially. TN calls timeout and ZA adjusted the receivers. The rest is history...TD TN.

Supposedly, the original call was some sort of hook and lateral type play where they were going to try and run it in.

Smith did a good job of keeping a defender off Jennings. Croom did work too. Georgia didn't know they let you play bully ball on hail Marys. They got bullied.

Smith was there for the tipped ball falling
Exactly... There's always a "trailer" guy on a Hail Mary that hangs out around the goal line. First guy tries to clear traffic, second guy posts up and tries to high point the ball, third guy watches for the tip.

It was funny this morning hearing Roddy White and Brian Finneran on the radio kill the UGA staff for their personnel moves on that play. Basically asking why do you try to defend a guaranteed jump ball with a bunch of little DBs and a LB who can jump but isn't used to playing the ball in the air when you've got about 5 WR/ TEs that are 6'3"+ that spend all their days judging the ball?

Makes a lot of sense.

Smith has the surest hands of any receiver we have. Pretty sure that's why he was in there.

You've got to be kidding, the surest hands?????? GMAFB!! Mrs. Smith he's a good kid, but he has NOT the surest hands by far on this team of WRs. lol

This is utterly false. Trust me... Smoking hot girlfriends are usually more trouble than anything.

You mean like when they find out you're telling people they're your girlfriends? I could see that. You're right, it'd be much easier to play it off with the lonely hearts.

Btw, props to your D&D crew for jumping in with the likes there.

Arian Fumble. Earned it in the Rose Bowl against UCLA. Kept solidifying the validity of it throughout his career here.

He made one of the best improvements I've seen from a player.

Georgia had been the more physical team all day long until it really mattered.
