True, but we're talking about a guy that was carrying a microphone around practice everyday so he could yell at everybody. If you're going to do that, you'd better get some results or people are going to just tune it out.

It my understanding that is was the locker room Butch that players might have an issue with. The way we saw him treat the refs wasn’t close to how he treated the players in the locker room.

What’s the point for Josh to discuss Butch’s shortcomings, even if he had already discussed it with Butch.

Many of us have grown up with parents or bosses that yell or have that sort of attitude with teaching. Not everyone can do that and expect to teach someone. What it comes down to is respect. I guarantee if Summit, or Saban, or someone you respect yells, you listen and it means something. Someone with an anger problem that doesn't earn your respect doesn't give you that. There's some people in life that when they speak up, people listen.

When Cincy came to Neyland, the camera focused on Butch Jones in pre game warmups as he was pumping up receiver Kenbrell Thompkins out on the field. I had never heard of Butch Jones until that day. I thought that was an interesting first name. But, what struck me was the way he was giving a fiery tough guy speech to his player. I thought at the time ... "that kinda looks like a fake tough guy routine".

When we announced him as coach, I remembered that exchange again, but quickly went about my duty to proclaim "Butch Gets It" as a true fan. Maybe what Josh is saying is what I witnessed? Seems legit. Some situations are too big for some people's personality and ability.

Lol...seriously?

I think he has a really good point. Can you recall another time where a head coach reacted that way to a regular season last minute regular season victory? Let's only consider ones most would view as competent. The guy literally broke down. I think Georgia should've never been in the game but he wasn't a good coach so they were. The story of his career.

These type of articles bring the amateur psychoanalysis out of the woodwork. Establish a narrative then find something to prove the narrative instead of learning the facts and THEN establish a narrative. Of course CBJ had issues which led to his demise. Not for sure I could quantify an emotional or mental disorder based on an article about Josh Smith ...but hey ...I’m an amateur as well.

Finally someone with some sense walks in!

Bad move to marry someone that hot.
He will never trust any of his buddies around her.
You should marry a good cook and good mom
You cheat with the hot chick
That’s how good marriages last

I married a hot blonde who is a great mother to 3 kids and still hot. Doesn’t go shopping and doesn’t care about looks.... that’s how I got her. Oh did I mention a great cook and dare I say slightly better than my mom, who holds the big family get togethers because of how good a cook she is.

Just saying that hot chicks are not all dumb instagram ho’s. My wife has never posted a selfie. You would think she’s very ugly by her FB because she only post kid pics

Former Vol Josh Smith admits frustrations with Butch Jones

Sorry if this has been posted, but is a pretty good read and how Butch really was behind closed doors. Which we have heard a lot of about him.

Past needing to read this now. If Butch was still on the jumbotron, and his name was still on the HC's office door? Then I would want to read it. But he now goes and picks up breakfast for the red team's staff in Tuscaloosa. Why waste time reading this now? No point in it.

I don't even think Kurt Russell broke down when he defeated the U.S.S.R. in the olympics.

Everything he said is true but it just cracks me up because he acts like he’s been in the nfl for years. He hasn’t even had his first preaseason game yet. It won’t feel like family when cuts start happening

Yep.
You win the division or the league and nobody including the players care how stupid or annoying you sound.

Start losing to Vandy and UK and it doesn't matter how well like you are.

What struck me most about this article was the insight into the younger generation's sensitivity to criticism. Older people like me were used to coaches yelling and never being satisfied with anything. Pat Summitt, Bobby Knight types. The younger kids seem to be less receptive to that type of accountability, rather preferring a coach who will instruct but not be very negative about mistakes. If Josh is representative of his generation and the stereotypes of their sensitivity is accurate, perhaps the coaches of today and the future will have to adapt to this psychology to be successful?

I agree about the younger generation not taking being screamed at or being held to the brimstone of fury if they get it wrong.
I also don't think that is what smith was trying to say in the article.

The good coaches quit with the negative, meathead screaming act about 10-20 years ago.

REALLY?? You may be right. The good coaches get their butts fired in this league.

The great coaches win all the time. Saban, Jimbo, urban...

Incorrect. He showed great flashes but when he wasn't hurt, he often disappeared.

Funny, I watched every game he played in for 4 years and never seen him do anything but avoid contact . As I said he was a message board enigma because of his size ,and the fact he had a family member post on here.

Didn't he kick somebody's arse in the locker room? That's not "avoiding contact"

I think you're remembering when Curt Maggitt reportedly whupped up on Justin Martin a little bit for stepping on the Power T after being told not to.
