Josh Selby, who committed to play basketball at Tennessee, has left DeMatha. He did not play DeMatha's last game. Coaches said that he violated a team rule, which was why he was not on the court or sitting with his team.

Here are some recent highlights of Selby:

He is a very good basketball player, but he may have an attitude problem.

If there is a silver lining here, it's that Selby is probably the best player in his class in DC, which means he's better than Markel Starks (Georgetown Prep/Georgetown), Tyler Thornton (Gonzaga/Duke) and Kendall Marshall (O'Connell/UNC).

All those guys have profiles here: DCSportsFan.com

The only thing holding Selby back is attitude.

Why does every player that violates a team rule automatically have an attitude problem? People screw up, and many of them don't have attitude problems. He may very well have one, but there is nowhere near enough information out there to pass judgment.

Pretty tough to get thrown out of school at Dematha when you are the best HS player in the area? Would you agree Loylaman?

I don't think he was thrown out. I think it was more his decision. It sounds like he didn't get along with the coaches. A lot of players leave DeMatha though for different reasons. Chris Braswell left becuase of grades, Jeff Allen (Virginia Tech) left for various reasons and there are many others.

DeMatha is so stacked with talent that players can be replaced easily. Their unofficial motto is that "We don't rebuild, we reload."

Selby will turn up somewhere and do very well, but he just won't get the attention playing at a smaller school.

I do want to agree with a previous post that said it may not be his attitude. Those are what people are saying, it seems to be the case, but Selby could be a very good kid. However, he is only a junior and he will have to enroll in his third high school......

Mike Beasley did the same thing and turned out fine, but it just seems a little strange.

Tons of schools recruited him.

Sorry, I was being facetious (probably should've indicated that better). Just pointing out that for some reason people tend to think great basketball players won't come here unless there's some problem with him. So I was just saying that if there is, other coaches apparently didn't see it either.

at one point.. he was the #1 pg in the country...
From what i've read.. it sounds like a disagreement with coaches...

He wasn't kicked out of school..

I heard from my colleague -- whose brother is a coach in the DC area -- that Selby sat out the other night against O'connell because of a violation of team rules. His understanding was that it was only temporary. I will post more if I hear more, but let's not take this report from the DC sports fan form as gospel...its just a forum. I, for one, hope that he isn't gone as I was hoping to take the 5 mile or so drive up to Dematha and watch Selby play.

In unrelated news, whoever lands Renardo Sydney is getting something special. My colleague -- whose basketball judgment I trust -- said that he has never seen a player with Sydney's skillst. He is 6-10, 250lbs, has the ability to run the point, and does on occassion. Sydney played against a team that had Jeremy Tyler -- the #9 overall recruit in the country for 2010, who is a 6-11 PF commited to Louisville -- and apparently toyed with him in every aspect of the game.

According to The Washington Post, Selby sat out for breaking a team rule and the coach was "unsure when he would return". Sounds like a little more than a team rule. As a former varsity bb coach, myself, I knew exactly how long someone would be sitting out.

I watched that Sydney guy play in the game you speak of. It was on ESPN(i think) last friday. He would take a rebound and go coast to coast under control and finish at the rim. The commentators said it was between ole miss, ucla, usc(CAL), ariz st., one more sec school ark. maybe. The junior he played against was not nearly as impressive. He is already a louisville commit.

He has several west coast teams on his list and then he also has UVA on his list, which is weird. I don't remember seeing any other east coast teams on his list and I have no earthly idea why UVA would be the one east-coast school he would be considering.

Yeah, my colleague said he was toying with the louisville commit -- who is legitimately good. Said he did some move where he faked like he was going to throw an elbow with one hand and then went to the basket with the other. Sounds like a rare combination of skill and size.

Here is the latest on Selby. This is quite vague -- no reference to the reasons for the suspension or an indiction on whether it is temporary or permanent. Will post more details if/when they become available.

Slamfest VIII turned into a coming out party for John Marshall guard Tahir Little.
Little, a sophomore, became eligible with the start of the second semester, and he made his first appearance last night at Benedictine, where the Justices fell to national power DeMatha High of Hyattsville, Md., 69-65.
The Justices, ranked No.4 in The Times-Dispatch Top 10, ventured out of the Colonial District title race for Slamfest's marquee game.
The Stags put four players in double figures and held on down the stretch by making free throws. Naji Hibbert, a top college prospect, led the way with 17 points. Marcus Rouse contributed 16 points, Jerrian Grant 10 points and eight rebounds, and Victor Oladipo 11 points. The Stags' other college prospect, Josh Selby, has been suspended from the team.

Five-star prospect and 2010 Tennessee commitment Josh Selby will transfer from Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha and join forces with 2010 five-star prospect Will Barton at Baltimore (Md.) Lake Clifton High School next year.

FWIW a buddy of mine who is a DeMatha Alum said that Rico McCoy went there in middle school I believe it was and left because according to my friend he wasn't going to get any playing time (yeah right) but he also mentioned he didn't care too much for the school
