Josh Pate eats crow about the Vols (and other teams)

I got tired of watching him just because he always has to "pop the paper" or "hate to say I told you so but..."

He strikes me a strange dude, probably nice, but I don't like him man. He aslo spends a lot time talking about him or his show no matter the topic.

He vamps a ton on his show. Every week he has to explain how his power rankings aren't a poll, or how his poll isn't a power ranking. EVERY week. It's the same explanation more or less, but it's 10 minutes of "content" so he keeps repeating it. And that happens a lot with his content. He repeats himself a lot, probably because they've never really worked on having a tight script (or even having a script at all). He got in early (good for him) shooting from the hip and that's how he's gonna roll, I guess.

Where he can occasionally give insight is when his connections to the industry tell him things, and that's usually what becomes his most interesting information. He can speak on the power politics of the sport, and those segments are alright. But the rest is very hit or miss.

I don't begrudge the guy or anything, if he's able to do it, hey, power to him. It's okay for, like, background noise or whatever. I don't find him weird, but I do find that if you've heard a half dozen of his episodes you've heard just about all of them. Anyone who's listened to him for more than a month can probably start predicting what he'll say before he says it. "It's not me, it's the model." "Meemaw always says." "Again this is just on neutral field." "I hesitate to say this" "People are going to mishear me." So on, so forth.

No one is gonna be 100% on their takes. But it's really surprising he was this wrong and on several big schools.

If you thought Nico was some sort of impossible loss, you simply didn't watch him 2024.
And there's the rub. A lot of these commentators didn't watch enough to see what we saw last season.

Josh and Greg probably should have their bird lunch together

Where Does Greg McElroy Rank Tennessee?

“At number 13, I have Tennessee,” said McElroy on a new edition of Always College Football. “I had them at 21 in the preseason. I’ve moved them all the way up, and I know people will say, ‘Well, Syracuse is not high-level competition,' but it was how they looked. I no longer have significant questions about Joey Aguilar, and how comfortable he’s going to be in the offense. I thought he made a lot of great throws in this game against Syracuse. Some down the field, low percentage, requiring big time accuracy, hitting guys in stride. I felt like he was actually better on the downfield in the one game than what I’ve seen from Tennessee in the last two years. Is there stuff to clean up? Absolutely. But I was pretty encouraged with what I saw from the offensive line. I knew the defense would be good, and they constantly harassed Steve Angeli, but I’m really excited about what I saw from Tennessee’s offense. I think that’s a replicable recipe and something they can continue to build on moving forward.”

This is kinda fun to watch. Josh Pate admits he was probably wrong about several teams during the pre--season (for instance, he picked Bama to win it all, heh).

The Volunteer remarks start at 11:49. Yep, he saved us for last.

Go Vols!

I think Josh Pate has the sweet eye for Bobby Hill…

Pate was saying all offseason that showing Nico the door might’ve felt good at the time, but on a Fall Saturday against a rival we wouldn’t be so proud anymore. He fell into the same trap that many others in the media did. Gave Nico too much credit

Pate preseason predictions this year were awful. He had Bama winning the title as well as Florida making the playoffs. Insane takes. I'll give him credit though he does eat crow quickly rather than sticking to bad takes.

He's not weird, he's just full of himself.

He's changed over the last 5 years since he got big.

The only one I can honestly say I was in disagreement with Pate on before the season started was LSU. I felt like they were going to be very good this year. I didn't think Nico was an impossible loss. It was more who we brought in to replace him than it was losing Nico. I'm so happy that at least up to now, Aguilar has surpassed expectations!

You probably shouldn't point out other people's wrong predictions.

Agree. Seems like a nice guy, but you could cut his show's run-time in half by cutting out all the extemporaneous talk.

Its almost like he's promoting his brand on his platform. One of the few bearable ones to listen to.

I like his show and the fact that he’s honest and can admit when he’s wrong. It’s refreshing when you have clowns like Joel Klatt and Brett McMurphy out there searching for clicks.

People want someone who just tells them their team is going to be great. If they say anything otherwise, they’re the enemy.

Yall are lame. He has by far the best college football show out there. Not even close
Agreed. Not even close. He's always been extremely fair to Tennessee. Even coming off as a fan at times, which he's not. He's a Nebraska fan and I didn't even know it till like a week ago. He's not a Big 10 homer, which I like a lot.
