Josh Malone?

Definitely. Stability in the program and Pinkel is a hell of a coach. But gah, I hate Missouri.

Back to thread, Malone's drop and subsequent interception were a HUGE momentum switch.

Still a year or two away VolNation…Go Vols! #VFL

As slow minded as our receiver coach is, I believe it will take Malone two more years to learn to play receiver

Why is it that in football, freshman who come in with the all mighty 5 star ranking are expected to perform at All-American type levels from the first day they step on campus? God forbid an 18 year old kid fresh out of high school needs at least a full season to get acclimated to college football.

Our fanbase thinks it knows more about foosball than it does. Even Justin Hunter and Da'rick didn't do that much when they were true froshies and both were absolute studs. Yet for all their playmaking they made some headscratching mistakes.
  • Da'Rick as a true frosh - Played in all 13 games for the Vols, finished the season with 11 receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns
  • Malone as true frosh - Payed in 11 games so far (at 10 games has 227 yards 1 TD off 22 receptions but keep in mind Da'Rick has Tyler Bray who loooooved going for the hail mary). Malone hasn't gotten the PT of the others either. And let's not forget Worley couldn't complete a downfield pass very often. He was the short/medium range passer extraordinaire.
  • Hunter as a true frosh - blew the doors off w/415 yards but he was a franchise player and Bray's go-to WR. Also had an 80 yard reception and we know how Bray loved the deep ball! And TBH when he went down his sophomore year Da'Rick showed he was just as good - far more physical and a total beast.

IOW, Malone despite his freshman mistakes is in very good company. CHILL FOLKS! Malone's gonna be a good one.

I think Preston Williams does not get red-shirted like the staff originally planned after the ACL.... they will welcome him in to direct competition from day one.

Don't get too far down on Malone just yet. Look at the improvement Smith made from his Fr to Soph year. It's a shame the kid got hurt because he was playing well.

If Malone can make the same type of improvement you'll see the recruiting stars

A five star wide receiver needs two to 3 years to acclimated to catch a slant that hits him in the hands?

You don't have to be an All-American to catch a slant. Especially one that hits you in the numbers. Say what you want, make all the freshmen excuses you need, but dropping that pass on 1st and 10 killed every bit of the slight momentum we had. Bottom line.. He was highly touted coming out of highschool for his polished reciever skills, but I've yet to see them consistently.

Read just above your post and you will see me address the talk about drops. You can call it "freshman excuses" all you would like, but youth and inexperience does cause problems and inconsistency.

I was told growing up if it hits your hands, you've got to catch it. Obviously there's some grey areas with that statement: great defense, taking a big hit, difficult body positioning during the catch. Stuff like that would make it more understandable to drop the ball. Fact is, the ball hit him in the hands and he dropped it. Freshman or not, there's no excuse to drop that ball. I'm not saying he's a bust you can't say that this soon, but it's not hard to tell that he isn't as advertised, yet.

Guys calm down.

Maybe if he was a redshirt sophomore we could have this discussion. He's a true freshman.

We can agree with the fact that he should've caught the ball and I was taught the same thing, but strangely the grey areas were never discussed as a kid. My original post was directed at the bust talk. He has been inconsistent to this point for whatever the reason may be, but again we both agree that it is far too early to label him or even begin to talk about him being a bust.

I think Malone will be great for us. But he plays like he practices-- inconsistently, with a lot of drops. He has the skills; he just needs more seasoning. IDK why they keep going to him in clutch situations. He's not clutch. Not yet.
