Josh Malone signs contract with Bengals

There's not a lot of give and take when signing Rookie contracts these days...It is all pretty much structured according to draft position. It comes down to amenities and restrictions, etc.

Yes. But Malone's slant to the house was the dagger.

That and Croom's TD against UK in 2014 are the only short passes like that a WR has turned into a TD I can remember since Butch came to town.

Hopefully we see 2-3 more like that from Byrd or Williams this year.

Depends. I think he could have gotten his full contract up front if he came back and had the year I think he's capable of having. With the Oline and more pass oriented QBs I'd say left a lot of potential $$ on the table.

On the other hand, Azzanni was still here when he made his decision and I can't blame him for getting away from that idiot.

Seems he made a pretty good decision leaving. Almost 3 million and a 600k signing bonus for 4 years. Not bad for a 4th rounder.

Too bad that he didn't listen to all of us "Arm Chair Quarterbacks" and remain in school another year.
Yes, he could have returned for his senior year and played the 2 receiver behind Jennings. He could have risked the new q.b. playing like Crompton and risk not even being drafted at all. Remember Foster remained for his senior season and fell from being on draft boards as a junior to being an un drafted free agent after his senior season?

Another millionaire VFL.

Go VFL!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like it's only about $599,241 in guaranteed money at this point?

I think he gets about another 500k -600k each year he's still on the team though.

its great money for most regular joes, but he definitely could have made more money with comparable stats by staying 1 more year at UT.

at this point, he is going to have to prove himself at the highest level, in the toughest league, to get retirement type money.

Cincinnati has John Ross, A.J. Green & Brandon Le Fell on the roster. Then they have many unknown receivers also on the roster.
I see Malone's best scenario is for him to be the #4 receiver behind Le Fell, Green & Ross.
He should be able to distance himself from the others on the roster.

Good point! Also consider that he could have suffered a major injury at any point in the season and hurt his draft status.
I would have taken what was a good 2016 season and left for the draft, rather than risk an unknown 2017 season.

It's entirely plausible that Malone will be better than 2 of those, so he shouldn't concede anything. I don't think he has Green's talent, but he should make a solid #2 receiver. Malone's best days are ahead of him.
