I don't get why players hire agents. The NFL rookie contract is 90% hammered out already.
Most sign with an agent because the agents pay them a stipend against their first contract as soon as they sign with the agent, well before the NFL draft.
Also, you guys earlier in the thread are forgetting about Tyler Boyd. He disappeared a little midseason but progressed quite well for the Bengals.
J. Malone starts the year 5th on the depth chart at best, will be unlikely to see significant snaps outside of special teams barring injuries.
The Bengals are hoping Malone will progress enough that in 2018 they can comfortably not resign La Fell, leaving it a competition with Malone & Boyd for reps on the edge opposite AJ Green so they can work Ross out of the slot creating matchup nightmares.
He's in an ideal situation 2018 and beyond in that he has the measurables to outplay everyone not named AJ Green and the Bengals have proven over and over a willingness to let veterans walk and play their younger draft talent.
Despite his superior measurables, if he doesn't prove to be a better possession receiver than T Boyd; then he is unlikely to make much of an impact during his career with Cincy. AJ Green, Eifert, Giovanni Bernard, and possibly Ross & J. Mixon, the Bengals have way too many proven hands to invest throws to Malone if he can't equal or surpass Tyler Boyd as a possession receiver whom the Bengals are satisfied with thus far.
