Josh Malone signs contract with Bengals

its great money for most regular joes, but he definitely could have made more money with comparable stats by staying 1 more year at UT.

at this point, he is going to have to prove himself at the highest level, in the toughest league, to get retirement type money.

600k guaranteed is a helluva a head start for someone barely in their 20's. the trick...not thinking that's a bottomless pit of money. be smart, and he could very well be set.

I thought he should have waited 1 more season, wrong, he got his payday and chance to play NFL football. Hopefully he can be a long term asset.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like it's only about $599,241 in guaranteed money at this point?

I think he gets about another 500k -600k each year he's still on the team though.

There's not a lot of guaranteed money for rookies except in signing bonuses for first and high second rounds guys - have to prove yourself to be productive and durable. The 2nd contract is where the real cash is made. This father of Hunter Henry, TE for the Chargers is a friend of mine and shared some interesting info with me about contracts, etc. yes I just name dropped.

Cincinnati has John Ross, A.J. Green & Brandon Le Fell on the roster. Then they have many unknown receivers also on the roster.
I see Malone's best scenario is for him to be the #4 receiver behind Le Fell, Green & Ross.
He should be able to distance himself from the others on the roster.

Definitely would be behind Green. Ross, probably. Lafell, not so sure.

Depends. I think he could have gotten his full contract up front if he came back and had the year I think he's capable of having. With the Oline and more pass oriented QBs I'd say left a lot of potential $$ on the table.

On the other hand, Azzanni was still here when he made his decision and I can't blame him for getting away from that idiot.

I agree. Wish he had a better QB than Dalton to get him the ball though.

He looks happy in the picture but there's a tinge of "tax bracket realization" in the photo as well.

Good point! Also consider that he could have suffered a major injury at any point in the season and hurt his draft status.
I would have taken what was a good 2016 season and left for the draft, rather than risk an unknown 2017 season.

Sutton and JRM will likely get comparable money, assuming they make a roster, despite serious injuries that were pretty much season ending. League minimum is $465,000 for a rookie in 2017, so he's only getting $100k more a year than the lowest paid team member. That's not a significant difference when you compare it to 1-2 round guaranteed money.

so there's too many possibilities to really know 100%.
He made the decision he thought was best for him. Hopefully for his sake he performs well over the next few years and gets a much better contract as a result. If its me, I stay and gamble on the big money.

sutton may do better. he's probably going to find himself squarely in competition to play right away. Malone, probably not so much. JRM...who knows. likley special teams contributor early. not sure what the floor or ceiling may be for him.

all i know is $600k up front, getting a contract, that's nothing to sneeze at, even if relatively speaking, it's not great by NFL standards.

agree with all that have said, if he can stay on the roster and maybe get a 2nd contract, even if not with the Bengals, as a FA later on, then he'll be young enough still to be just fine....assuming he's smart with the money to begin with.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Malone ends up better than Ross. It's hard for a 5' 10" receiver to stay in the league for a long time unless your Wes welker

or any of the patriots WR's....:)

Ross will be a good addition in the slot with Green outside.

Government takes 1.1 - 1.4 MM and he spends the rest on a big house and a couple nice cars, puts his mom up in a respectable home.....and he's broke if he doesn't get a second contract. Not that a college degree is any better. College degrees are worth what they used to be.

I just think when he has his first knee or ankle injury, his speed will diminish, and that's literally all Ross has. Hard to be an average speed receiver at 5'10" unless you have tom Brady or PM throwing to you, and Dalton is not in the same galaxy as either.

Dalton is not terrible, and it's an assumption on the injury side. i don't know how durable he is, but is a leap to just say "when he gets injured, this will happen".

all i'm saying is a guy with that speed, a decent enough qb, and bigger targets around him, he can certainly find a home as a slot receiver.

It's entirely plausible that Malone will be better than 2 of those, so he shouldn't concede anything. I don't think he has Green's talent, but he should make a solid #2 receiver. Malone's best days are ahead of him.

You are correct, but Ross is a speedster. Of course, a few years ago, had a player who was a speedster but he could not catch the ball. He ended up playing for Pittsburgh for one season and mostly returned punts. Can't remember his name but he was from Louisana.

You may end up being right, so respect your opinion - and Ross was the one that went 1st rd.

For my money, 4.4 speed at Malone's size is elite. Hopefully his production will match it.

This. God forbid, but say he gets injured in training camp never to play again. He does get the $600k but that's it. He's young, no career, no degree, and has $600k to live off of until he can draw SSN at 62. If you think that's great you must like that EBT card getting flush again once a month. Sheesh is everybody working at Taco Bell on VN or what?!?

The SSN age is 68 if I remember correctly.

People always forget that more than 50% of that $$$ will go to his agent and taxes.

If he has a clear $250,000. after that then think about his having to live, buy a car, ect, ect.

It's never as much $$$ as most people think.

I hope he's really smart and saves every penny he can for the future.

I'm happy for the young VFL and I hope he turns into a star.

VFL...GBO!!!
