Josh Malone feels underrated

Malone could go either way depending on how hard he works. I agree with the early exit to the NFL.

Most of the reason why he's not projected to be a Day 1 or Day 2 pick is due to his coaching the past 3 years. If you read the scouting reports on him, most of his weaknesses are related to bad coaching (i.e footwork, route running, creating separation, etc.). I wonder if CZA had left for the Bears in December if Malone would have been back.

you got it! we all have to blame someone else don't we? makes ya feel better about yourself when shortcomings can be put off on another person

I'm not blaming anyone. I am reporting what the consensus is with NFL scouts/NFL Draft Advisory Committee. When these guys say the same exact thing for other players (I'll admit North and Howard had other issues as well), the common denominator was CZA.

On the bright side, there was another receiver who many people thought left foolishly after his junior year. He was coached by CZA and had the same "lack of polish, bad footwork, and bad route running" critique from NFL scouts. His name was Antonio Brown.

I think you are referring to Jomo Fagan

Sounds like Jerry Rice to me. :-D

If he puts in Jerry Rice kind of dedication, he'll become a good one. Lots of physical tools, good character, durable, and a history at UT of improving and producing more each year. Somewhat off the radar due to our run oriented short pass scheme and the end result of horrific OL play in yr 1&2. I would snatch Malone in a late round all day.

Wish he had stayed for his own good generally. Normally, it's good to take the leap upon QB change. But, in Josh's case, he and JJ would have been featured on O and possibly get a more downfield oriented offense w a better passer.

Yes, we can always say that it would have been best for him to return for a senior season.
However; you have to consider that he could have gotten injured his senior season and had a bad year by playing at less than 100%.
You have to consider that neither of the q.b's could have a good year, thus his receptions numbers go down.
You also have to consider that the new O.C. could move away from throwing the ball. Less opportunities for him to shine.
Also, consider the 2017 vs 2018 receivers that are entering the draft. Is the 2017 NFL class short on talented receivers and he has a better chance of getting drafted this year as opposed to a heavy class of receivers next season entering the draft and he goes undrafted.

It is a gamble either way.

A. Foster returned for his senior season and his draft stock fell to the point that he was not even drafted.
J. Allen was fortunate because Fulmer changed him from safety to corner and he ended up being drafted in the 1st round. However; it was a close call because he injured his hip during the UGA game. That could have been horrible.
Or if Scotty Hopson had returned for his senior season and been coached by Martin, he could have been drafted in the NBA; however, the rumor was that his grades were not good enough for him to return for his senior season.

I wonder what last season what have been like if Malone went to Clemson. UT would have probably lost more games and Malone's draft stock would likely be higher. Would never imagine that with the way some of Tennessee's own fans talk, though.

Lucky we got you.

ALL those dropped passes are noticed by NFL gurus. Josh is talented, but he will have to prove himself at the next level.

What "all those dropped passes"? He had only a handful of drops in 3 years, was outstanding catching 50/50 balls last year. My guess is NFL gurus will notice more his good size, great speed and outstanding route running and production.

He's soft. I just don't see how he takes the next step. If he turns into a truly great receiver, it'll be a huge surprise to me.

I also agree with the poster who said going pro after his only above average season is a red flag.

I hope he does well in the NFL because it reflects well on the Vols. I think it's a long shot though.

We don't beat App State if it wasn't for him. That's so sad to type.
