Josh Malone Exploring Entering Draft

How much Guaranteed Money can a 3-4 round WR expect? Not salary or incentive pay; if you don't stay healthy or miss the cut you never see that. I'm talking about the check or checks that are guaranteed on signing day. Anything less than a mil I would stay. A college degree and his connections from playing at UT would be worth 3-4 mil over a career. JMHO

Hunter and North should've stayed one more year imho too but it is what it is.

Yes, i agree. Sometimes we wear blinders bc we like our guys. He will be drafted but he needs a lot more toughness. If he goes i hope he does well. Eirher way its good for us. He csn go and if drafted we can say we send folks to the dance. If he stays, we have a potential big play guy back.

Its a weak Wr draft and Josh had the best yr for a UT Wr in years. You ppl that say a college degree vs making 100k are crazy. A person has all their life to get a bachelors which is the equivalent of a hs diploma and equates to a basic job and living. Josh is likely gone because his grades to date have been well and theres likely nothing better he can do @ UT.

Indeed. Sure hope he hangs around though. Without him, our returning WR depth is beyond paltry. Only Jennings had more than 15 catches.....Jennings 34, Byrd 15, Smith 11, Brandon Johnson 7, George and Callaway 1 each.

At the end of the day, I think Malone comes back because his draft grade will be too low. Needs another solid year imo. Of course, breaking in a new qb could have some bearing on his decision. Just hope he doesn't make a impetuous decision like North and winds up undrafted.

Its called targeting. Most NFL teams have a go to receiver, a number two receiver and a TE. Tennessee has 2 go to WRs in Malone and Jennings, two secondary choices in Byrd and Smith and TEs Wolf and Croom.

If Malone leaves early, the Vols will have Jennings and Byrd as top targets, Smith, then three top notch underclassmen in Johnson, Callaway and Williams.

This will give Dormady or Guaratano ample bodies to choose from when looking for open receivers downfield.

by now he should know where his draft grade is and I think he gonna sell himself at the combine...I wish him well..

Play in the toughest conference and risk career-ending injury

- or -

Get on an NFL list somewhere and receive league-minimum $250kish (unless you crush the combine and who knows....?)

...and you're 21 years old. Hummmm.......

IMO I always saw Malone as just the guy who can run fast. If its a 50/50 ball it goes to Jennings all day. Not trying to hate on Malone at all because we all loved those TDs he put up this year but as a nfl receiver I don't see him doing much besides maybe catching a few fade/go routes. If he does come back that's great news! If he goes I wish him the best of luck. Great year Josh!!

What money? Signing bonus of what? Practices and takes a season ending injury in the NFL and never sees the field? What money please, chump change? Take out income taxes and state income raxes where must NFL teams are, SSN, and Medicare, oh and your agents cut, and you walk off with chump change you can use to finish your degree work. If you're not in the first two rounds it's not a bag of cash you get.

He's making a mistake if he goes imo. He's been very inconsistent thus far and dealt with a bunch of injuries.
Scouts will like his size but he isn't a burner. I think he'll run somewhere around 4.55 or so. Without having been highly successful in college (like a tredwell type), he's likely to be a late draft pic...if selected at all

If North could crank out a 4.48 at the combine, I could see Malone running in the 4.3s.

Malone is definitely a burner.

Malone was clocked at 4:43 & 4:49 in his recruiting profiles before he got on campus.

UT needs draft picks to point to for future recruiting. I am all for Malone going and doing well as a pro. Can only help w/ guys down the road a la Tee Higgins.

Most NFL teams have a go to WR, a number 2 WR and a tight end? Wow, who knew?

It's called having no experienced, productive WRs outside of Jennings if Malone leaves. Smith is experienced but not productive (11 catches this year). Byrd likely moves over to cornerback next year, and even if he stays at WR, he brings back all of 15 catches back with him. He certainly has potential but, as many have said, he likely moves to defense in 2017.

So that leaves us with Jennings, who had a solid season but doesn't have the same ability to stretch the field as Josh. After that, there's Brandon Johnson (7 catches), and Callaway and George (2 catches total) returning next year if Malone bolts.

Perhaps we're discussing two different things? I didn't say we wouldn't have any WRs left, nor did I dispute how NFL receiving corps are configured. I simply said that without Malone next year, we'd be very short on experienced, productive WRs.

So would that mean we might need one more WR in this class?

Malone is definitely exploring, and I think there’s a better chance of him leaving than most seem to be thinking right now.

Anyone who watched him play this season saw this coming..

regardless of what the money is its more than he has now and better than a 9-5 or going to class another year. Also clearly you don't understand that a 3rd or 4th rd guy makes more than most ppl with a college degree and it last for a 4 or 5 yr period.

But Jennings is moving to S...😂

Someone mentioned earlier the biggest difference is jenning will go up and fight for the ball alot more than Malone and I think that is the difference that will make or break a wr in the NFL. Anyone with that level of talent can be taught to run routes and catch a good ball. But will your wr go fight for a ball 3rd and goal from the 10 with the game on the line. Both are good players but in that scenerio I pick JJ all day.......and twice on Sunday.
