Josh Heupel is the perfect coach for Tennessee

When nobody had any expectations for us in 2021 and the beginning of 2022 I remember CJH going for the kill every time, even with only a few seconds left before halftime, even the end of regulation (ie Bama game 2022). For some reason he started slowing things down and playing more conservatively starting in 2023. We always said it was the QBs, but Joey is lighting it up this year and we still went conservative for some series. Maybe it’s because everybody now has HIGH expectations and he is more risk averse. Anyway, per the OP, yes, CJH is great for us and I wouldn’t trade him for anyone even if he frustrates me sometimes. We are all looking backwards at his decisions in slow motion. He had to make quick decisions in the heat of battle which is a lot harder. I bet most of us would have probably made the same, or more likely worse decisions in real time. I would have been at risk for wetting my pants on the sideline if I was coaching the last minute of that game 😀

That's an interesting observation. Good insight there. Except for the pissing yourself part.

What many are missing in that last drive in regulation is (1) we moved the ball into FG range and (2) we needed to run clock, which was especially important in a game where our defense was struggling.

IMO, CJH managed that sequence very well and a 37-yard FG attempt with essentially no time left was a great outcome. Then a penalty and missed kick messed it all up.

If Heupel had thrown three incompletions, made the FG and gave Georgia a minute to go down and beat us? The Legions would be complaining for the opposite reason.

It has taken me until today to come back here and I am shocked at all the negativity. The coaches did everything they could to win that game. The 4th down throw by Stockton I doubt he makes again in his career. Perfectly placed ball by an imperfect QB. Our money FG kicker missed. We loss the coin flip for overtime and our stunned offense after the missed FG had to run back on the field. Everything just went Georgia's way. I do not blame the coaches. We are in such a better place even with the heartache of Saturday. Maybe people forget how bad we sucked just 5 years ago?

Fulmer was a "heck" of a coach.
Heupel is a Hell of a coach.
Maaaaaan.... C'mon now. Give Fulmer his due. It's not even close right now. CPF has back to back SEC titles and an NC along with the best recruiting UT has EVER had. I like CJH, but your statement is a "Hell" of a stretch. Now having said that... CJH is still here and COULD eclipse those accomplishments. I hope he does, but right now... it's not really close.

The Legion will complain. Like a physical law of nature.

Both things can be true.

Heupel Needs to develop as more of a killer in almost every aspect…

Heupel also just took arguably the best program in College FB currently to the Brink the first year we are passed the Blue chip talent line people for get we are barely able the line while UGA is well above it
Yeah that's simple stuff that comes from experience. Not a glaring weakness that you just can't shake. Heupel was super aggressive early on and has adjusted his play style every single year he's been here. The guy is always changing his philosophy to suit his players skillsets. Being a chameleon is one of the most important traits a coach can have.

I agree with the orig post. However, the only problem I have is that we get a lead and he becomes entirely too conservative. I do not like playing not to lose !!! 68 years a Vol fan watching and listening.
We had the best rushing game in the SEC last year and he thought his guys could get it done that way. Plus kicking the field goal puts us up 8 which is a lot harder to beat than being up 5. A lot of young player mistakes in that drive let Georgia win. If we don't get that field goal, we're down 3.

From a coaching, culture, attitude, and philosophy perspective, this guy just fits in Knoxville. I know there are some people still second-guessing some of his decisions from Saturday but he is a heck of a coach and representative of Knoxville. We are slowly building up. Honestly, I have seen a lot of Georgia fans talking about it, and we have won their respect.

I had Tennessee at 9-3 in my preseason predictions but I think we will land at 10-2 now. Heupel is too good of a coach and we have too much talent. I knew that the 24th rank and Nico concerns were ridiculous because we have too talented of a team now. Every year, our recruiting is getting builder, our culture is getting better, our hunger is getting better.

Kirby Smart, best coach in CFB right now IMO, took 7 years before he broke through and got the National Title. He inherited a lot stronger program than Heupel. We are just now off of sanctions. We have literally been irrelevant for 15 years (not a destination place) and had recruiting sanctions and yet we are bringing in blue chips, competing with Alabama and Georgia, making a Playoff, etc.

The guy represents the school well off the field, recruits players that I want to root for, builds a team that we can be proud in, etc.

I hope this is appreciated and I look forward to future with Heupel. I think he knows it is a good fit for him and I hope he sticks around. If he stays long enough, I think we will eventually take home the big trophy and perhaps even more than one.
Honestly though… I think most schools/fanbases would be stoked to have him as their HC.

He is no hidden gem anymore.

Hey....................................I am so glad we have Josh as a coach. I just like the killer instinct, win lose or draw. Never slack up just keep pouring it on. Seems like during the 3rd quarter we became much less aggressive. Played lights out in the fourth quarter.

That is the thing, I think both Saban and Smart would have done something similar to Heupel at the end of the game. The recipe was there to win had we made the kick.
Think so too. I attended an Army/Navy game when Navy had a long win streak. Army is driving for the win and fumbles at about the 3 yard line. Bad things can happen. He had confidence in the K or he would have gone to plan B. I think the penalty and resulting flow interruption was a big part of the miss.

It is all true, it was just a tough pill to take... especially considering all the arrogance about the win streak.
