In his on-the-field, post-game comments, I just assumed he would say something about the turnovers and mistakes. Most coaches would as they’re always wanting to subtley blame players for losses or poor performances. Heupel didn’t say a word about mistakes but rather praised the team’s effort and and genuinely seem to enjoy the win from the player’s perspective. What a refreshing attitude.

Praise in public, criticize in private. It’s what good leaders do. He will talk to the players in the film room about what they need to do better, but no need to publicly bash them, especially after a win. It’s very refreshing after the previous coaches that we’ve had.

Everyone should be happy with this. People that thought we were going to ride them down like grass were delusional. That's a solid football team with a good coach. All their players have only had 1 head coach, many 4, 5 or 6 years under his regime. This is a game we lose in years past. We've got a lot more dog fights coming this year, it ain't gonna be easy. We'll start with Florida. GBO!

It was a solid football team but we had numerous opportunities to put that game away and continuously shot ourselves in the foot. Have to clean it up. It's not a talent thing. It's a discipline and execution thing.

I agree. And they don't pull in top 10 recruiting classes. They develop what they get. Pitt should hold their heads high. That's only their 1st loss in 4 games against us. The only other SEC team to ever beat them in more than a dozen games (versus SEC opponents) was Ga Tech 2x. Good win. Move on and take care of business next week against Akron.

Tough win against a quality team on the road while not playing our best - how many times have we been able to say that in the last decade and a half?

Another way of looking at this win is that it begins to put to rest the "UT will never win tough games with that gimmick offense" garbage. Well, even with the "gimmick offense" shut down most of the second half we found a way to get the W. The mistakes can be rectified, but the experience of toughing out a game like this is priceless.

They also lost their starting QB mid game. The shoulda coulda's always work both ways. It was a quality win against a ranked team on the road. Hadn't had many of those the last 15 years. I'm not going to look that gift horse in the mouth.

This is not a complaint, and I agree Pitt is a solid team with a good (but unstable) coach. However, I disagree on the "delusional" part of a blowout prediction because we were one dropped pass and two fumbles from a 3+ TD win. Shiznit happens, but on a better day we would have made those plays. I also imagine Pitt was demoralized because we took out Slovis, hobbled Patti (a true gamer), and even their defensive players started dropping like flies. Again, not complaining, just saying this game was much closer to a beatdown than some might believe.

Nice comment! I think all of us have VDS(Vol derangement syndrone) We've been beat down so often the past 15 or so years, we assume we will always lose. I, for one enjoyed the Big Ten like game yesterday. Winning ugly is great! We can't always put 50 points on the other team. Hendon was good but not great and last years maligned defense showed up. We're not an elite team yet, but we can be a good team this year. Beating Florida is our next step. I'll take any kind of win!

I agree with you but the thing that bothers me about this offense is no one that is winning National Championships runs it. I have also noticed that it is not nearly as effective in the second half of games . It is actually designed for the second half of games when we have worn our opponents down. Seems like it takes most good teams about a half to adjust to it and make the correct adjustments then we struggle. I am not a nega and enjoy watching them run it . I just don’t know if we can win a championship with it.
