Josh Dobbs - NFL Draft thread (merged)

yet for the vast majority of his career, he was the subject of criticism everywhere he went.

can't win with a qb like that. this is a pocket passing league. the eagles will never win a championship etc, etc, etc...

Just like Dobbs at Tennessee.

This type of talk just comes with the territory as a black QB.

Honestly, the Browns do not need to draft a QB number 1 overall. There are no QBs in this draft that really stand out and give them a shot at success immediately. No luck for any players like Andrew Luck.

He had other great playmakers. Mike Williams was just one of many. Did you already forget that incredible catch Jordan Leggett made on that inaccurate throw in the final seconds of the national title game before the game winning pass?

Deshaun Watson was basically the opposite of Dobbs. He had his receivers bail him out constantly with his inaccurate throws. While Dobbs had perfectly thrown accurate passes dropped by his receivers constantly.

The NFL (as usual) will even this out. Expect Deshaun Watson to be a Vince Young type bust. He'll have one or two good seasons before flaming out. While Josh Dobbs will have a career like Randall Cunningham. He'll start off slow playing behind Philip Rivers. But in 2-3 years he will be among the best QBs in the NFL and will carry the LA Chargers on his back as a franchise for many years.

Yeah, no he didn't. Allow me....

1. Top WR was Artavis Scott, a 5'10 possession WR who averaged less than 10 yards per catch. Expected to be a 5th or 6th round pick this weekend. Nfl.com describes him as "not particularly fast or quick"

2. 2nd leading WR was Charone Peake, who was a 7th Rd pick last year to the Jets. I could stop there, however, I'll add this about him from NFL.com....

"Hands are extremely small for his size and position. Late to get hands in catch*-ready position on intermediate throws. Dropped five passes for drop rate of 9.1 percent. Slows a bit on vertical routes when turning to find ball rather than maintaining top speed."

That don't sound like they're describing a great playmaker that Watson could just throw the ball up to.

3. 3rd leading receiver was Leggett. He was a 3star recruit catching passes from a 5 star qb. I think Leggett's a nice player, but, let me ask you a question....what's more likely....that the 3 star recruit made the 5 star qb, or, the 5 star qb made the 3 star recruit?

Additionally, Leggett had 525 yards receiving and 8 tds in 2015....that means that Watson, when not throwing to Leggett, ONLY had about 3600 yards and 27 tds passing

4. His 4th leading receiver was Deon Cain...who? No, not Dean Cain from Superman.....the former 5 star knucklehead recruit Deon Cain who got sent home for drug issues prior to Clemson's 2016 title game vs Alabama. Looks like he's a decent downfield threat.....but I repeat, he was Clemson's 4th leading receiver.

5. Finally, his 5th leading receiver was Hunter Renfrow....a 5'11, 175lb white freshman walkon former Highschool quarterback. Recall that Renfrow was Watson's go-to receiver vs Alabama in the January 2016 title game they narrowly lost to Bama. You gonna argue that Renfrow was/is a great playmaker?

Link some of those, and then point out some specific plays and compare them to some of Dobbs college plays. If possible, compare similar situations, routes, and coverages.

I'm actually working on that. I'm gonna isolate some plays of Dobbs and Cunningham in action that are nearly identical. I just need to turn those clips into gifs then I'll make a thread about it and post it on here. Most likely after the draft.

But I promise you this will be coming shortly.

Dobbs and Cunningham are scary similar. Just wait till you see what I found.

I was thinking earlier that Dobbs should get up to 235-240 even if he risks losing a little speed. He won't be able to power through defenses like he did in college. I do admire his deceptive strength though.

I don't care what their ratings were in college. Go watch the tape. They were making circus catches for Watson his entire career.

Like I said earlier just go back to the national title game this past year. If not for Jordan Leggett making a circus catch in the final 30 seconds, that final TD pass never happens.

Dobbs has guys dropping easy catches every game. Watson had guys making highlight catches every game.

Never saw him play live but I did watch a lot of his games on YouTube. Not just the highlights but full games of the Eagles circa the early 90s are on YouTube. And after watching those games, I realized Dobbs is just like Cunningham.

The long slender body types are the same. Both have similar throwing motions. And strong arms. Both are also incredibly elusive and make defenders look stupid on the regular.

Josh Dobbs will be as dynamic in the NFL as Randall Cunningham.

Seems like I made this comparison at some point last year and you shot it down. Yeah, you definitely did.

Is this Randall Cunningham you're comparing Dobbs too? :lolabove:

You've done nothing but criticize Watson for the last couple hours in this thread. He's a black qb. You a bigot/racist too?

There's a difference between a fan of the team and criticizing your own successful QB vs an outsider criticing the QB of an opposing team. If we were Clemson fans, your counter would be legit. But we're not Clemson fans. We're Vols fans. So its natural for us as opposing fans to be critical of other teams players. And its natural for us to be defensive about our own players.

The point I was making about black QBs being unfairly criticizes is mainly with regard to that teams own fans criticizing him unfairly when he is very successful.

If you noticed I never got on someone like bamawriter for criticizing Dobbs. I would argue and disagree with him. But I always understood that as a non-Vol fan he would be highly critical of Josh.

What I never understood was Dobbs own fans attacking him eventhough he was the 2nd best QB in school history.

I now know why you said we had the best 22 in the country.................... You are getting fandom and having an honest assessment confused. If Josh Dobbs played for Georgia, you wouldn't be propping him up to be Quarterback Jesus. If Josh Dobbs played for Georgia, my opinion on how he translates to the NFL would be exactly the same.

A person's opinion on how good or how not good a player will be in the NFL has got dick to do with what college team you pull for.

I find it interesting that everyone blasts Dobbs development but it was Todd Mcshay who said it was the tape that he rewatched not his development post season that altered his grade on him.

Hard to follow McShay on this one imo. Said he watched Josh play in games, saw him live, figured him a 6th or 7th pick which, as we all know, project player. Then, last week, says he watched his tape and said he could sneak into the 1st round. Huge disconnect there imo.

I understand getting to see a guy workout, taking a deeper dive into what he has on tape and, certainly, I understand how any team/GM would love Josh's athletic ability and off the charts intangibles.

But at the end of the day, it's still about playing football.....and if he was a 6th or 7th round guy, maybe even an UFA while the season was going on based on how scouts saw him play, how in the world does all the off the field ancillary stuff catapult him from being a project to a guy who should make a impact as a starter in year one, which is pretty much expected of a first round guy. That's silly season stuff imo.

I hope Josh will go early, would love to see him go earlier than I still believe he will (4th round at the earliest). But if he does, I gotta seriously question the process of the last 4 months or so. A player's value has to be in large part determined on what you've seen him do on the field, playing the game, not just on what you think his potential is. Like I said, big disconnect imho.

I predict that all of the UT players in the draft will go anywhere from #1 to undrafted. I will check back after the draft and rub your noses in me being right.

Am I catching on D4H?

I still say Cunningham's arm was a lot better. And that's not to say Dobbs is subpar.
