Josh Dobbs - NFL Draft thread (merged)

Dobbs value with NFL teams is higher than that of the media. Several teams are looking at him in the late 2nd to early 3rd round.

Chargers are taking him that early because there is no guarantee he'll be available when they pick in the 3rd round.

There are about 25 QBs coming in the NFL draft.
Probably about 7-8 teams want a QB or really need them.
Let's say that 3 QBs go every round.
1st round - 3/25
2nd round 3/22
3rd round 3/19
4th round 3/16
5th round 3/13
6th round 3/10
7th round 3/7

After the 3rd round, 9 QBs will be gone to a team that NEEDS a QB.

I don't think the chargers are desperate to need a QB in this draft. They would perfectly be fine drafting a QB in 5/6th rounds with 13-10 left on board IMO

I agree if the a team wants him, ANY team would have to hope he's still there in 3rd/4th round .. but chargers aren't taking a QB that early regardless if they want Dobbs

When I see a D4H thread guaranteeing a prediction...

Don't ask me how I know but this is gonna happen.

The positive here is that Josh gets picked high in the 2nd round. Will be great for Josh and his family. And it will be great for our program to have a QB selected that high in the NFL draft. The negative is that he will probably have to sit for a year or two behind Philip Rivers. In all likelihood the most action we will see from Josh the next two years in the NFL is in the preseason. I would have preferred Josh getting drafted by the Steelers if he was gonna have to sit for a couple of years behind an aging veteran QB. But I guess the Chargers will have to do.

Time to start buying some Chargers gear.

Ok, so I'm asking, how the freak do you know this is happening? Got a pipeline to the Chargers do you? If you're wrong, you going to come back on here and admit you're an idiot?

So much silliness on this site.

QUARTERBACKS

THE RISER

Josh Dobbs

Tennessee

6-3, 216

40 time: 4.64

Vertical jump: 33 inches

Hands: 9¾ inches

Round projection: 3

Mayock's take: "He's played a lot of football. He's long and athletic. He has a whippy arm, which I like. A very live arm. After his pro day, I got several texts from coaches and scouts telling me how impressive he was. He's a very smart kid. Majored in aerospace engineering. Interned with Pratt & Whitney. He's a very athletic kid. His downside is a lack of consistency with his accuracy and the spread-quarterback thing. But he's a guy a lot of people look at and feel he has starter traits, starter physical traits. But he's going to take time to develop."

RUNNING BACKS

THE RISER

Alvin Kamara

Tennessee

5-10, 214

40 time: 4.53

Vertical jump: 39½ inches

Hands: 9¼ inches

Round projection: 1-2

Mayock's take: "For whatever reason, he was behind the other running back at Tennessee (Jalen Hurd). I don't understand why. It wasn't until Hurd got hurt and then left the team that Kamara finally got his first start. When I watched his first start (against Texas A&M), I was blown away. I thought he was a first-round talent all day long. He's 215 pounds. He's quick and explosive. He's outstanding in the pass game. People were buzzing at his pro day about his ability to catch the football. He's not afraid to block on third down. The biggest questions about him are, he signed with Alabama and then left. And he didn't start at Tennessee. If you can answer those questions to your satisfaction, then he's a first-round talent.''

TIGHT ENDS

THE SLEEPER

Jason Croom

Tennessee

6-4, 246

40 time: 4.63

Vertical jump: 34 inches

Hands: 9½ inches

Round projection: 7-FA

Mayock's take: "He ran a 4.63 at his pro day. There's a little buzz about him all of a sudden just because he had some injuries early on in his career. He was a wide receiver and was moved to tight end this year and then he got hurt again. He made just five starts and only had 21 catches. Long story short, athletically he can help you in the pass game Year 1 as a former wideout. It's going to take him some time to learn to be a run-game guy. But he's athletic and can catch the football."

Dobbs and Kamara were kind of obvious but I must say seeing Croom's name on this list surprised me. He just might sneak into the 7th round because of his physical tools. And we might end up with 7 Vols getting drafted which would be amazing after have none drafted for the last 2 years.

Here is how I see the draft shaping up:

DE Derek Barnett - mid 1st round
RB Alvin Kamara - late 1st round
QB Josh Dobbs - early 2nd round
CB Cam Sutton - late 2nd round
WR Josh Malone - 3rd round
LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin - 6th to 7th round
TE Jason Croom - 7th round

Remember three months ago in mid-January as the Senior Bowl was about to begin, KBVol was scouring the internet for links to websites saying that Dobbs would go in the 6th-7th round of the 2017 NFL Draft or in some cases undrafted. At that moment I said that Dobbs would end up getting 3rd round grades from most of the league after the draft process concluded and that at least one team would fall in love with him and take him in the 2nd round.

And lookie here. Just as we are about to approach draft day all the "experts" are now falling in line with a 2nd to 3rd round projection for Josh. Mike Mayock now has Dobbs projected to go in the 3rd round. A few days ago Todd McShay had Dobbs rated as a late 2nd round pick. And a few days before that Mel Kiper Jr. came out and said Dobbs could go in the late 2nd to early 3rd round.

What I said would happen 3 months ago is exactly what has happened. Most of the league now has a 3rd round grade on Dobbs and at least one team has fallen in love with him. Get ready for the Los Angeles Chargers to select Dobbs with the 38th overall pick in the 2nd round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

You better hope that is EXACTLY what you said.

If you change your predictions every 3-4 days and move the goalposts constantly, you're bound to get something right eventually.

Only you are shameless enough to project Dobbs going 38th overall and use 3rd round projections to toot your own horn about how right you are.

I may ne crazy, but after watching the gruden QB camp, and seeing him side by side with the other QB's in this draft, I'm convinced this guy is going to be a good pro too. He just needs the opportunity. I hope the Browns do take him, I really do. He would be a good fit.

SIAP.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2017/i...pects-position-new-no-1-quarterback-nfl-draft

1. Trubisky
2. Watson
3. Mahomes
4. Kizer
5. Dobbs
6. Peterman

Dobbs lands in my top five QBs for the first time. He has excellent intangibles and intriguing physical tools as a dual-threat QB. His Senior Bowl performance, under the tutelage of Browns head coach Hue Jackson, was promising, but Dobbs is still very much a project as a passer and needs the right coaching/scheme to realize his potential.

GREAT For Josh!! Means he will probably get some time to develop, instead getting Thrown to the Wolves!!:rock:

.

Let's also give a shout out to Nate Peterman at no. 6. He had a hard time at UT, but I'm glad he got another shot getting himself a chance to make it to the NFL.

and no matter where he winds up on anyone's ranking, i agree with Mcshay's opinion on him as a prospect. situation and scheme will be fundamentally important to his success/failure in the NFL. he wouldn't work in an Indianapolis Colts type offense.

where could he be successful? Carolina...Kansas City...Seattle... Tennessee... Minnesota....New Orleans...Pittsburgh to a lesser degree (thinking early career Ben R.).not gonna say those are the only ones, but those type of offenses offer the kind of fit that could get the most production out of him.

Josh somehow made it work here with Butch Jones essentially trying to sabotage his talents. Josh will be fine in the NFL regardless of where he goes.

He's the type of player that makes a system. He isn't the type that needs a system to succeed.
