He is no longer in Knoxville. Shame. The thing I hate about the players who have left early is that although none of them would probably start, they all would be solid backups in the 2 0r 3 deep rotation. And when the 2 and 3 deep are good, the team can be great.. That is why 16 seems more the year to me than 15..

I agree, we get all hyped on the freshman talent and the media predictions about an SECE championship, but another season is when it could be a reality and not just a wish. All of the injuries we have are probably due to so many players having to play extra reps because of no depth. That could be the downfall this next season.

If Dobbs goes down, outlook changes quickly.. OLine will be improved but Im not sure it will be improved enough to just line up and run the ball 85% of the time... maybe the inordinate amount of injuries and bad luck comes back to the good side for the Vols this year. I also cringe when I just see one open weekend during the season.. Its nice to have another one in there before the stretch run..

I totally disagree. I don't fault Butch Jones for pretending like we don't have depth because he's still trying to sell playing time to recruits, but the reality of the situation is that back-to-back top-5 recruiting classes have left us pretty stacked at almost every position. For example, here's our projected four-deep at DE for the fall:

1st string: Derek Barnett & Curt Maggitt / Chris Weatherd
2nd string: Kyle Phillips & Corey Vereen
3rd string: Andrew Butcher & Latroy Lewis
4th string: Darrell Taylor & Jakob Johnson

That might be the best DE depth chart in the nation. Realistically, where would Joe Henderson have fit in? 3rd string? It's unfortunate things didn't work out for him here, but we'll be fine without him.

We have plenty of returning talent and experience to challenge for the SEC East title this year. Maybe Butch wants to keep embracing an underdog narrative for recruiting reasons, but it would be a HUGE disappointment to finish with 5 losses with our roster this year. As fans, we're entitled to raise our expectations for this season and expect 9 to 10 wins.

Difference between good/proven depth and general depth. We're stacked in some positions but not in others. Good depth positions:

WR, DB, DE

Decent depth:

DT, LB but a lot of unproven players there

Bad depth:

RB, we manly have 2 guys. QB, we have one guy that's played college ball. OL, they were awful last year. We have a guy possibly starting at LT in Kerbyson, who literally didn't touch the guy he was supposed to be blocking on multiple occasions. TE we have one guy who played decent as a freshmen and a former walk-on who played but didn't make a huge contribution.

So I'd say we're still a year away because even this year the good depth is still really young depth.
