Seems pretty self-aware to recognize the different qualities required to be successful. It's even better that he chooses to instill those qualities in the young men he coaches.

Everybody needs to let it go.

I've never seen worse timing for a cliché...

....and more people willing to lap it up, take it out of context as if it was meant literally and act like it was a crime against humanity.

Of course it was stupid. It's a cliché. That's part of what makes a cliché a cliché.

But if you paid any attention to what he was saying, he wasn't talking about some sort of achievement for his team, he was just trying to say the his group of Seniors had grown to be good men.

The mistake was not just plainly saying " the results aren't what we wanted, but I'm proud of these guys." Instead, he spoke like Butch does and people ran to it like an overturned PBR truck in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

Im with you on what he meant. But perception is reality, so.why double down on stupidity? Take the chance to explain yourself, its not that difficult. But no, instead we say something else stupid to defend the first thing that we said that was stupid.
To me this is a bigger issue with CBJ, we simply cannot admit a mistake or take any criticism. Take the 4th and goal from the one, we have a chart that tells us nonsense....good grief coach just.say.looking back on it probably should have gone for it. And today, take the reporters question to clarify what you meant with the Champions of Life, then it will die.

But oh no, we cant have anyone question Butch Jones.
Dude, with that attitude that joker better start piling up National Championships with no off the field incidents.

Fine, but it doesn't alleviate his uncanning ability to make ridiculously clichéd statements that bring uneccesary negative scrutiny upon the program. All because he cannot accept reasonable criticisms of this season's failure. He's taken a bad situation & turned it into a national meme of the absurd.

I've said it since the guy arrived. He's a cliché machine. That's just what you know you're going to get when he talks to media. I think he sounds ridiculous, but that's what he is.

Thing is... we know this about him, so that makes it doubly stupid when we hang on his every word as if it is meant to be literal.

If you read the article in the OP, it's obvious the writer has no sense of what the original comments were about and the whole piece is just a glorified message board post.

It wasn't what he said, it was when he said it and what context he attached it to. You surely know this. If he makes that comment a few days earlier or later while only discussing the quality and character of his players then it's all good, there's no story.

But when you get asked about not meeting your teams goal(s) and you immediately pivot to that? That's why he's gotten roasted locally, regionally and nationally and deservedly so.

The dude is 100% tone deaf as exhibited by yet another comment he made which he says is the reason (falsely) that his "champions of life" comment didn't "resonate"..... he says it's because 7 other teams have the same motto. For crying out loud, how tone deaf can you be? I'd be thrilled if he never does another presser or stands in front of a microphone again. Just skip it altogether or let someone else speak for the program. Let Shoop do it.....he can't coordinate a defense for ish but he's very good and forthright when speaking to the media.....and he "owns it".

It's not the cliches that get him into trouble. Yes, they're mundane and monotonous and goofy, but he doesn't get himself into trouble with them.....they only elicit eye rolls.

It's when he gets off the cliche script, that's when he gets exposed as thin skinned, tone deaf and, quite honestly, dishonest.

Butch does himself no good whatsoever by regurgitating the Champions of Life thing. He's going to get nothing but ridicule from the media and others by continuing to bring it up in any context. Someone close to him needs to counsel him to just let it go, put it all in the past, and move on.

It doesn't matter how corny he is until the winds change. You hit a couple big speed bumps and everything you say is picked apart.
