Rucker: Why doesn't loss to Florida Gators define UT Vols

“This doesn't define who we are,” Jones said moments after Tennessee turned another two-score, second-half lead into a devastating loss.

Here’s the thing, though: Saturday's game defined exactly what Tennessee football is right now.

Tennessee football didn’t used to be like this. Tennessee football almost certainly won’t be like this in the future. But right now, in this exact moment, in the here and now, this is Tennessee football.

Math can be a cruel mistress for many of us, but try to imagine all the things Oklahoma and Florida had to do right in the second halves to beat Tennessee this season. Then try to imagine how many things the Vols had to do right. The latter is much, much simpler.

Tennessee just had to do a couple of things. It just had to make a couple of plays. It's not that complicated. Just make one stop on defense. Just generate one first down on offense. It’s not Joshua Dobbs Science. You don’t need a calculator or even pen and paper to solve it. Just. Make. One. Play.

Football can be a cruel game. Like anything else in life, it’s not always fair. But Tennessee’s losses to Oklahoma and Florida weren’t unfair. No one needs to call The Innocence Project. Tennessee didn’t have anything taken away from it. The Vols did this to themselves. This is what they've done so many times in so many games against so many quality opponents the past several years. The list goes on and on and on. If you can imagine a way to lose a football game, Tennessee has done it. The Vols, for good measure, have even found ways few could imagine .

This game defines Butch Jones as a coach and proves Oklahoma was not a fluke.

Some UT fans ticked off a voodoo priestess 10+ years ago. We have found the most creative ways to lose of any team I've ever seen. It's remarkable.

I often wondered what it was like to be a loyal Vanderbilt fan. Knowing that you have no chance of ever going to Atlanta. Doubting a victory even when you have a lead. Knowing that if someone rolled in with a ranking, you would lose.

I'm beginning to understand. Anchor down.

P.S. We haven't slipped that low. But I know how they feel.

Its unbelievable how we KNOW UT is.going to lose these games. If this game had been on an ispiring football movie I would have raised cain on how ridiculous it played out...

FR qb looking awesome, 3 FR OL, defense losing key players, converting 5 4th downs are.you kidding.me?

Most cliched finish ever. No one would buy that.

Went to Cracker Barrel after the game and every TN fan within earshot was just smiling, joking and saying how TN blew it again. Nobody wearing orange, no flags on cars. It's like nobody cares anymore.

It doesn't define the team but it does define Butch. We have lost 2 games we had no business losing this season. The kids played hard but the playcalling and game management was terrible.

Time to face the fact we hired the wrong butch. He is over his head in a major conference and a bad game day coach. 2 timeouts on FL 4th downs is retarded and terrible coaching

Interesting fact I became aware of tonight and that is out of all the college football games played this year, teams with a 14+ point lead in the 4th quarter are 188-3. Guess who has 2 of those 3 loses. Your first 2 guesses don't count. SMDH

Vandy is 19-11 over the past three seasons.

We are 14-15.

It's crazy. If yesterday you tell me we rush for over 200 yards, had even turnovers, 28 points and 6 minutes remaining and our defense had to stop 1 of 5 4th down attempts, I guarantee a win.

Here's the difference in my mind. Vanderbilt has less talent than the team they are playing 90% of the time. They aren't supposed to win. Losses don't hurt so bad since their expectations are usually pretty low. We on the other hand have the highest recruiting budget in the nation. We have one of the largest fan bases and support our team as well as most any school in the country. Knoxville in the fall completely revolves around UT football yet we continue to hire coach after coach with no real track record of success. Tennessee shouldn't be an "on the job" training school but it is. Please don't tell me about some championship that Butch won at Central Michigan.
