Jones On Will McBrides red shirt

I get if JG gets hurt, but leaving the game for one play? That is beyond stupid to burn a year of eligibility over one play.. Run a damn wildcat play with Kelly or Chandler..

He wouldn't do that.....that would make to much sense

What does the Red Shirt matter with McBride? JG will be the starter for the next 4 seasons and McBride will likely sit the bench and hold the clip board.
I am sure that along the way, we will recruit a q.b. that is more talented than McBride. Have not see McBride in action, so I can't say what his talent level is though.

And, knowing that, might be hoping for that 5th year of paid education

Irrelevant to the real issue. With four games remaining, your backup QB is very likely going to get on the field. If JG can Ironman it without needing to sit out a play or two? Great...not realistic. Not with the pounding he’s going to take and with two physical defenses in LSU and Vandy upcoming.

While I certainly understand where you are coming from I'm not so certain WM would go in for the S miss, MO, or the Vandy games unless JG got hurt.

Rarely do you see the starter miss a play here or there or even a series...... Unless there is a QB battle, there is an injury or the game is basically over in the 4th.

Right now there is no QB competition.......and WM is not going in as a change of pace or anything like that. Therefor the only reason he would go in would be as a replacement for an injured JG. So if that were the case why even use it unless you have to?

I am pretty sure McBride is not the future at QB. Shouldn't matter if his RS is burned. He was recruited to provide depth.

Edit: I see Rudy already addressed this.

There was a proposed rule change last summer which would allow players to redshirt and play limited time. I see no evidence that it has moved passed proposal stage, and even if adopted who knows when it will go into effect. But those reports did confuse me earlier.

You keep throwing the “unless JG gets hurt” out there like it’s “if Martian’s buy UT”. He doesn’t have to get knocked out for the rest of the season for him to get shook up. It’s just not terribly realistic for him to go the rest of the way undinged. McBride will see some snaps and for once it’s not a Butch mistake.

name some of them..............

Alexis Johnson most recently. Quarte Sapp played two seasons ago in the first 3 games and still redshirted, which is why he couldn’t redshirt last year with the injury. Maleik Brown,Kendall Vickers. Several others in past seasons. Usually special teams so you don’t see the high profile skill players very often.

Yea, I'm not trying to blame Butch.......heck nothing has even happened yet.

All I am saying is the only way WM plays is if JG becomes injured in some way.......be it a play or two or half of a game.

Therefore if that is the only way WM gets in there why even try to put him in unless that does happen?

Not true. We’ve redshirted players that played in the first 3 games that weren’t classified medical.

True, look it up. You burn the redshirt if you play just one play unless granted a waiver (i.e. medical redshirt). Medical redshirt can be less than 30% of the games.

Sorry, Page Not Found | NCAA.com
Using a season of competition

In the coming months, committee members will examine whether the rule determining when student-athletes have used a season of competition should be modified.

The current rule considers a student-athlete to have used a season of competition once he or she participates in competition, unless the student satisfies an exception or qualifies for a waiver.

I’m not advocating...just predicting.

It's Jones we are talking about here. He'd burn the red shirt with 3 timeouts in his pocket, 30 seconds before halftime
Spot on. One certainty, in the midst of all the uncertainty, is that Butch has an renewable supply of dumb moves.

Sapp had an injury.

What does it matter to Jones ? ... He (Jones) won't be around next year anyway ... Burn it, don't burn it ...

I know you guys need for Butch to be 100% wrong in everything for you to enjoy his exit properly. Hope you can settle for less. :)

I'm not looking them up. The current rule is that unless there's a medical hardship waiver granted, a player can not "redshirt" if he's participated in a single play.

And I’ve seen the exceptions. Guess they just slapped big toe boo boo’s on some of the reports. :) Don’t get so cantankerous, I didn’t ring your doorbell.

I didn't post anything cantankerous. You posted incorrect information. There's not an exception to the NCAA's redshirt rule for TN players.
