It's clear that Jones does not want to overhaul the offense or making any major changes but sees the opening as a chance to make the program better. "An opportunity to enhance your football program and not change what we’re doing but be able to enhance it," Jones said. "We can bring some fresh ideas in here, some new things. I think change is good. It's going to be an exciting time, but I don't see us making monumental changes offensively."
Jones: Finding offensive coordinator all about fit | WBIR.com

“It's finding the proper fit for your football program at what stage it's at,” Jones said. “When we hired Mike Debord he was the exact fit that we needed at that time. Now obviously it will be somebody that fits our profile. Somebody that can come in and enhance our offensive system. I have really liked the way we have played football, particularly towards the end of the season. I think the stats, the points per game and everything speak for themselves. I liked our balance. I liked the way we pushed the ball down the field. I liked our formations. I liked our different personnel groupings. So there is a lot that went into it."
Jones updates his coordinator search

Unsurprisingly, Jones talked about the same criteria before & after his last OC search:

I'm okay finding a coach that fits his style. The last thing he should do is bring in a coach with an entire different style and philosophy to what we've been running. Remember Sunseri?

Coffin...nail...done.

Debord threw Butch a lifeline by leaving, but he decided to tread water instead.

The next OC needs to understand the importance of developing players to become champions of life. They need to understand what it takes to compete in this conference and maturation process of these student athletes

"Former Oregon coach Mark Helfrich visited Tennessee during a bowl practice, spawning rumors he might be the next OC at UT. But Helfrich was in Nashville to visit his former Oregon quarterback, Marcus Mariota, and is not considered a candidate for the UT vacancy."

Perhaps all of this Helfrich talk is simply pure BS ......

I'm not a huge fan of Butchs style of offense but 2017 is make or break. It would be stupid to do a full overhaul of the offense at this point and the offense does work well if executed properly.

When they say they are not a candidate usually means they have their bags packed and on their way

Anyone who thought Butch was gonna change his offense was naive. He will hire a no name and give him the same 8 plays that Debord had.

So in other words, he's going to hire another guy to run HIS offense. Cool.

Anyone thinking he's going to hire someone to run a completely different offense is being ridiculous. It's what the HC knows and what he's recruited for

Solid B effort...you missed a layup, though...change "developing players" to developing individuals" and you would have nailed it.

This thread will probably be merged, but I do not get those saying because Jones saying he does not want total overhaul of offense means Helfrich not likely. He ran spread which while it may not be the exact same type of spread, it would be similar enough.

Plus, he mentioned he wanted someone that could develop QB and he fits that too.

Just waiting on them to hire an A.D. imo.

Didn't really think about it that way. Royce Freeman had over 1800 yards rushing last year, so Helfrich definitely knows how to call running plays. I think where could really help us is in our intermediate to deep passing game.

Even if he was planning on visiting Mariota ( I think he knew he was hurt before he came though) why visit our practice?

He could have visited Nebraska practice but did not

He did not have to visit any practice

Butch had to invite him to practice too btw

Several titans boards were talking about CMH in town to visit MM8, but if you mention it on vn, its negative and you are stupid.
