Canales was there for Phillip rivers worst 2 seasons in college. His best years his freshman year and senior year Canales was gone. Don't know much about his time at USF
If Canales is such a good hire for QB coach, why in the hell was he coaching RB's at some crappy school????
Jesus, at least give the fans a little hope and hire someone who's making a lateral move.....thins is like hiring David Cutcliff to coach Special Teams
I wouldn't want to reinvent the wheel if I was Jones. We scored more TDs this year than any year in the history of UT football. The O wasn't the problem. Let Scott come in and improve the same O that was effective this past year.
Added a QB coach which was a huge need. May not be Weinke, but we have a QB coach. He may turn out to be a great hire. Who knows.
The key to this season is training up our QB to be, and letting Shoop get his own guys in there. The D was the issue this year. Injuries and corners not knowing how to turn their heads and find the ball.
As you migjt remember he was the intetim HC at NTex when the Vols played them last year. The school fired the HC. After the season the school hired a new staff and Canales was asked to come to Utah St. where he graduated from to join the coaching staff.
He is a brilliant OC and QB developer as all of us Tenn fans living in Tampa know from his days on the USF staff.
Okay I'll play, since he is a brilliant QB developer, why have all of his QBs sucked and not gotten better, save an all world talent at NC State that was actually better after he left?
If he is a brilliant OC, then why has he never stuck anywhere as an OC.
And if he is good at both of these, then why was he an RB coach at Utah St last year?
Seriously, Tennessee could go out and hire an blind, leprous kangaroo and half of you dumb bastards would laud him as the next Lombardi.
I used to think this but then I look at what some teams were able to do against Bama. We produced this record scoring offense by playing a fairly weak schedule looking at it in hindsight. There also was the Dobbs factor that people seem to ignore. Considering these two things, I believe our offense definitely needed improvement, but I don't think Jones could have done much better given the AD situation and his warm seat. I will root for this low profile coaching staff to surprise us all this year and clear their names of doubt. Butch can't get past 9-4, strength coach hasn't coached college in a long time, QB coach's numbers were lower than the years that followed his tenure, unproven OC and D.C. Out for redemption following a horrible year. Then there is Mahoney who has yet to produce a strong year on OL and Azzanni will have to show he can develop this receiving corp to replace Malone.
Thank goodness that in the history of UT football we have never played a weak schedule like this one. How about those 38 points we put on UF air raid style? They had one of the top defense in the country and both of their corners are going 1st round. Dobbs was a pro style QB that the coaches successfully converted into a duel threat guy.
Now for the Bama game, I guess all I can tell you is after a brutal 3 game stretch look at who was out on offense and how good Bama's defense was all season. Kamara went out early, P.Will quit that week, Hurd didn't want to be there, 3 OL were out or injured.
Dobbs was never a pro style QB, he was recruited as dual threat QB. Where do you get that he was a pro style QB from at any point?
