Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay Bucs) discussion

The longer the wait. The more interesting it becomes.
It will be a better sign.

If all these coaches start signing with other schools or re-signing were they are.

The better the chance this is already a done deal.

Time,a friend or the enemy?

The chances of Gruden coming have significantly decreased to somewhere around ZERO.

Let's hope Butch or Kiffin happen.

i think time is an enemy at this point and the fact that there haven't been more heads roll makes me worry even more. We are losing recruits and Davis would be a great announcement to all the recruits to assure the team is going in a positive direction. Davis has pulled great recruits from big programs during his small time at UNC and even away from Fulmer and crew.

I would be in a frinzy if chuckie came to UT. The biggest thing Tennessee has been missing in past years is discipline, Im pretty sure that would not be a problem 4 Gruden. GO VOLS!!!

its like christmas waiting to open a present. Could be socks. *shake* could be money *shake* could be carbine assault rifle with laser scope. i have no patience and an over eager imagination. guess ill go back to ncaa 09 and keep my own destiny going above par.

I thought what he said was clear except for the part where he said UT hadn't even contacted him. With all of the rumors that have been spread its hard to believe that UT didn't even contact him. Personally, I think our athletic department is dumb if they didn't even have him on their list.

I know this sounds like im in denial, but it makes since to me that he would say they haven't contacted him so the media would lay off his case. If they believed him on the contact issue they would not question him about UT anymore. This would allow him to finish out the season in peace and then after the season possibly leave.

But, all and all I think he isn't comming. He probably likes coaching in the NFL.

I just caught up on this thread. Arrrrrrgh!

Couple of thoughts:

1) I don't have access to a computer for a few days, were Jon's denials about the ND and Michigan job given the same way as this one?

2) I really hope "NFL FAN" isn't JC himself.

GRUDEN DOESN’T SAY “I’M NOT GOING TO BE THE TENNESSEE COACH”
Posted by Mike Florio on November 10, 2008, 8:45 p.m. EST
Two year ago, then-Dolphins coach Nick Saban persistently said, “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach.” And then, as soon as the season ended, he became the Alabama coach.

On Monday, Bucs coach Jon Gruden didn’t go quite as far. Which means that the possibility of Gruden leaving for Tennessee will linger.

Said Gruden on Monday, when asked for the first time about the looming vacancy at the University of Tennessee: “I’ve said it from the beginning, this is the only job I’ve really ever wanted. As long as the Glazers will have me, I’ll be here. I have a lot of respect for Tennessee. I grew up down there a little bit, my wife is from there, but this is where I want to be. I can only make myself that clear.

“I don’t want to even start that. I’ve wanted to be in the NFL my whole life. This is something I’m really excited to do, and this is where I want to be. I’ll leave it at that.”

Given that we’ve heard more unequivocal statements from guys like Saban in the past, Gruden needs to go farther than he has before we’ll believe him.

He needs to say, for example, “I will not under any circumstances be the next coach at the University of Tennessee. If they’re interested in me, I’m flattered. But their time is better spent pursuing a candidate who will take the job. I will not.”

Instead, Gruden has left plenty of wiggle room. “I’m eager to finish this season with the players that we have, and I’m excited,” he said.

This tells us that Gruden isn’t interested in talking right now, but if the folks in Knoxville would be willing to wait until the season is finished, he might be inclined to listen.

And if we’re wrong about that, Gruden can clear it all up by saying, ”I will not under any circumstances be the next coach at the University of Tennessee. If they’re interested in me, I’m flattered. But their time is better spent pursuing a candidate who will take the job. I will not.”

When did he say that? I haven't seen him quoted saying that in any of the articles I have read.

Also, is Woody Paige just a straight up liar if this is true?

The problem with the comparisons to Saban is that you're actually dealing with someone with integrity here.

good point, also ive heard in the past that he has had some issues with the Glazers, so who knows, maybe the Glazers won't have him back

I think this has probably dragged on too far. Would he be great? Yeah. But I think it has been pretty clear that he won't come.

Basically the whole quote comes from a Sportswriter for the St. Petersburg times. He got it in the locker room and may or may not have recorded it and I have yet to hear it. He posted it not in an article but in a blog. Now we are left to deal with it. Has anyone heard audio of it on ESPN or otherwise?
