GRUDEN DOESNT SAY IM NOT GOING TO BE THE TENNESSEE COACH

Two year ago, then-Dolphins coach Nick Saban persistently said, Im not going to be the Alabama coach. And then, as soon as the season ended, he became the Alabama coach.
On Monday, Bucs coach Jon Gruden didnt go quite as far. Which means that the possibility of Gruden leaving for Tennessee will linger.
Said Gruden on Monday, when asked for the first time about the looming vacancy at the University of Tennessee: Ive said it from the beginning, this is the only job Ive really ever wanted. As long as the Glazers will have me, Ill be here. I have a lot of respect for Tennessee. I grew up down there a little bit, my wife is from there, but this is where I want to be. I can only make myself that clear.
I dont want to even start that. Ive wanted to be in the NFL my whole life. This is something Im really excited to do, and this is where I want to be. Ill leave it at that.
Given that weve heard more unequivocal statements from guys like Saban in the past, Gruden needs to go farther than he has before well believe him.
He needs to say, for example, I will not under any circumstances be the next coach at the University of Tennessee. If theyre interested in me, Im flattered. But their time is better spent pursuing a candidate who will take the job. I will not.
Instead, Gruden has left plenty of wiggle room. Im eager to finish this season with the players that we have, and Im excited, he said.
This tells us that Gruden isnt interested in talking right now, but if the folks in Knoxville would be willing to wait until the season is finished, he might be inclined to listen.
And if were wrong about that, Gruden can clear it all up by saying, I will not under any circumstances be the next coach at the University of Tennessee. If theyre interested in me, Im flattered. But their time is better spent pursuing a candidate who will take the job. I will not.
