Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay Bucs) discussion

I think the rumor started in this article.

So with more and more NFL head coaches realizing that they can get almost as much cash and a lot more control at the NCAA level, the biggest question involving a current NFL head coach and a coming NCAA vacancy is whether Bucs coach Jon Gruden will flirt with the folks at the University of Tennessee.

Chris Harry of the Orlando Sentinel writes that Gruden’s contract with the Bucs doesn’t prevent a jump to the college level, but the throw-in nature of the statement makes us wonder whether that’s actually the case.

Though Gruden could never leave the Bucs for another NFL team absent permission, the Bucs can’t physically keep him from coaching at the college level. But the Bucs could sue Gruden for damages if he were to leave the Bucs in a manner that violates the terms of his contract. (Likewise, UT could be subject to liability for tortious inteference if it lures Gruden to break his deal.)

As we discussed earlier today with the Killer B’s at ESPN Radio in Tampa, the specific contents of the contract will go a long way toward determining whether Gruden could leave for the Tennessee job without an ugly fight. It’s possible, for example, that his contract specifically identifies the Tennessee job as one that he could pursue, if/when it ever becomes available.

If the language of the deal presents an impediment to Gruden’s departure, the Glazers could decide to let him go, just as the Falcons did last year with Bobby Petrino.

The biggest factor in all of this is whether Gruden wants to make the jump. Even if he says that he doesn’t, the Nick Saban experience of two years ago requires Gruden to be over-the-top unequivocal before anyone will begin to believe him.

If Gruden wants the Tennessee job, he needs first to study his contract and second to explain candidly and honestly to his current employer than he is interested in talking to UT.

The reality is that this process will take time. And until Gruden knows what he wants to do, he needs to have a solid plan in place for dealing with the questions that inevitably will come. And if there’s any chance that he’ll eventually get the job, saying “I’m not going to be the f–king Tennessee coach” isn’t the right answer.

But it’s likely that, in this case, there is no right answer. Refusing to discuss it will only fuel speculation that Gruden is interested. Saying that he’s interested will only create a distraction.

Stay tuned, because he’s bound to be asked the question soon enough. And until Tennessee hires someone else for the job, we won’t rule out the possibility of Gruden eventually singing the praises of good ol’ f–king Rocky Top.

He said it was possible that it was in his contract. I haven't seen anything that said it was.

Hey freak give me your opinion..what coach does your gut say we get?

Well, I don't think we land an NFL guy unless it's Kiffin. I don't think we get Davis and I think Leach is too controversial.

My guess is Brewster based on all of the buzz or Kiffin, although the more that comes out about him, the more I wonder if he would be a good fit.

With that said, my thoughts change daily.

you would think if an offer has been made someone somewhere as in the media would know about it, a $5million offer would be hard to keep quiet wouldn't it?

Not really. I don't know who Gruden's agent is but I'd bet it's not Drew Rosenhaus. Some people are capable of discretion.

I don't know if any offer rumors are true or not but if you know about it, they obviously weren't able to keep it quiet.

Freak, I think this is one of the reasons Hamilton hired that head hunter. I read the article on him, and from what I read, it seems like this guy is top-shelf. First name basis with college coaches...discreet...no written notes...face to face...can keep a secret. Makes sense.

IMO, Hamilton has told him "Go find the next head coach for UT". Everybody knows what's at stake, including Hamilton. If you look at the last four head coaches (based on the article) that this guy turned up, and landed, it will be money well spent.

Look, I love UT football, and I'm on record that Fulmer is a first ballot CFHOF inductee. Like it or not, the Fulmer era is over. Let's get it right when we choose the next head coach for UT football.

Go Vols.

Do you know anything about his supposed "problem"?

I just wonder if the search firm would have been necessary if Tennessee thought they were getting an NFL guy?

You're a lot closer to the campfire than I am.

Can't help you with that one, but I would say that I think Hamilton is being wise by using every available resource to make sure he gets it right.

This is a defining moment for both UT football, and Hamilton's career.

Just things I've heard like I'm sure everyone else has.

First off, he's a strange bird. He decorates his office with pirate memorabilia. Everyone that knows him well that I've heard speak about him seems to describe him as a strange person.

Second, I just wonder if it's a black mark that he was on Hal Mumme's staff at Kentucky that ended up getting into some NCAA troubles. I believe left before it actually all went down though.

i was wondering the same thing vol freak, why hire a search firm if gruden is the guy you want?

Even if you were dead set on Gruden, you would still want to explore all options. If I was the bucs owner and Gruden told me he wanted to leave. I would try to keep it quite for as long as possible. The bucs are almost in the playoffs and something like this could crush the team.

I agree. There's no guarantees though. So maybe MH hired them to cover everything in case the NFL guys doesn't work out. Who knows...

Deniability? Cover his butt? Get an extra set of eyes? Follow the same path as with CBP?

Yeah but obviously that basketball hire was a different animal. We really NEEDED help with that one considering we could only lure a mid-major type guy.

I agree. The expectations for BB was a lot less (then) than they are for FB now.

i will be happy as long as we get someone in here that can win. We can talk about this all day -- to me it boils down to, WILL they win or not???

That's the million dollar question, of course.

We'll see what happens over the next couple years.

read this on another message board, for whats it worth

"The local ESPN outlet here in SW Florida reported today that Tennessee has floated a five million dollar a year five year trial balloon contract at current Tampa Bay Buc coach Jon "Chuckie" Gruden.

Gruden's wife is a UT grad, where he met her in 86 when he was an assistant there.

Per ESPN, the initial reaction from sources close to Gruden say that he has interest."

because if true, and i did say if,seems like a offer has been made

Can you imagine trying to win the SEC with CUM, Satan, Miles, Richt (to a lesser degree) and Gruden all coaching?

Gruden would be nice...the Chin would be nice as well...for some reason I think these 2 a kind of far fetched.

One thing I have wondered. Rumor has it that Gruden and Kiffen are both in town. I wonder if the Fulmer firing was planned for this week since the Bucs are off....Gruden's wife is a UT grad, he would be in town...Hambone knew he could show Gruden around this week and have an opening....think this is possible??

I'd still include Spurrier in that group and you know Auburn is likely to hire a pretty big name coach also.

I love all these people that keep saying "not going to happen", like they have clairvoyant powers. Its more than likely the same people that said "not going to happen" when talking about if Fulmer would be let go this year or not.

Exactly. The SEC may just want to secede from the rest of CFB. What could possible be harder than winning the conference?!
