Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay Bucs) discussion

I t won't be cutcliffe b/c he just signed with Duke last year and he's is older I think they're gonna look for someone younger to be around awhile!

Vols fans - I wish you nothing but the best in your search for a new head coach. However, you might as well forget about Jon Gruden. He reeks of pro coaching. He is the ultimate strategist who is all about wins and losses - molding young men is not in his make-up. His temperament is not suited for the college game or college players. It is well documented that he far prefers working with veteran NFL players rather than young pros - so why would he move down to the college ranks? Makes no sense. The effort required to recruit and the responsibility of molding young men would be too much of a distraction from his undying need to be locked in a dark office studying film of the pro game where only wins and losses are his concern - not recruiting, not players feelings, not the responsibility to his 18-22 yr old players or their parents. Tampa Bay was his dream job. He's stated that time and again. The clincher is that he has a new contract with Tampa and if you know anything about Tampa, their owners do not let their coaches out of contracts - multiple times they have denied other teams from talking with their assistants (including a LB coach who wanted to go coach with his father in law when he got a head coaching job). It just isn't going to happen. Period.
I really think the Vols should go after the Texas Tech coach as the top priority. Mark my word, your wasting time, energy and breath even discussing Gruden. Hope y'all get a good one as even though I'm a UVA guy, I've always enjoyed watching TN Football. Love the tradition - wish the Wahoos had 1/10 of yours. Take care.

If I was smart, I'd close this thread after the above post. That's pretty much all that needs to be said.

What are all the things Peterson has done? I can think of the win over OU. Other than that, he hasn't stood out.

NFL FAN, GAVol...you're just a couple of naysayers, always saying "nay."

You're gonna feel awfully foolish when Gruden's running through the "T" with the Vols next year.

John is that you???...please say it is not so!!!!

Boise state has done well in the WAC I mean it's not the strongest conference, but they're home record is great and they are another possible BCS buster this year!

I agree GV. After hearing Doug Mathews today on 104.5 stating the difference between college and pro coaching, it opened my eyes as to why Gruden is not even a long shot to come here.

My dreams have been crushed.

Wanna know what's spooky?...after reading that NFLFAN post it sounded like every jon gruden interview I ever saw, know what I mean?

No, but if I was, I'd probably remind you that the man's father was a scout/coach for the first TB staffs when Tampa came into the league and thus, where he spent several years during his childhood. Therefore, his dream job. That lure (which he has achieved) far outweighs any sentimental feelings he would have for the place where he spent one year as grunt grad assist in my opinion. There are far better candidates, particularly ones that are actually options. I'm certain the Vols will end up with a good one.

I guess you missed the part about having to convince high school kids to come play for your school. Working long hours is one thing (which you have to do in either job) but dealing with high school egos is another altogether. By the way, explain why being an NFL coach is harder.

ummmmm....one word on this.....discipline is much easier...coaches in college have or can have if they choose to, more control over the players. I am sure Gruden was saying a few years back when he was dealing with Keyshawn......"this is so much easier than dealing with high schoolers that I can simply convince they will play a lot and will get tons of national coverage at elite college program 'x'." You people need to put a little thought into this stuff before you spout off. Also, as has been stated, his wife's family is from Knoxville area and he has land in the area.

On Cowher, and I may be wrong here, I believe he has a daughter attending UT. If that is the case, one of his reasons for leaving Pittsburg was to be there with his family and his girls as they finished up high school and started college. What better motivation and opportunity would he possibly have. He loves hard nosed football, as most Vol fans do. I think it would be a great fit. Just a thought though.

The only thing foolish here is you believing rumors by talk radio people and internet message boards for pete's sake. Rumors that don't match logic. I tried to provide that logic, but I'm sure you'll keep your hopes up. Best wishes.

I'm not saying "nay". I'm saying "think".

I could be dead wrong about this, but I can't think of a decent reason for Gruden to leave the NFL to coach at Tennessee unless the money was just insane. Even then, I don't think there's much about him to indicate that he'd be a good fit.

Somebody has difficulty detecting sarcasm.

I would support Gruden 100%, I think that would definitely have a positive effect on UT's potential for next year, though it is a long shot. I hate Tampa, but that doesn't mean I don't like the coach, he's very good and Tn. needs a very good coach to provide a team that we all expect from the Vols. I'm hoping for Gruden personally.

The CIA would'nt have detected that sarcasm, if it was which I doubt.

You doubt I was being sarcastic about Gruden being the head coach at Tennessee next year?

Really?

Nobody really thinks he's going to be the next coach here. Few would object to the idea, but no one really thinks it's likely.

I mean this new coach thing is of some interest even it is Gruden, but what intrigues me is who will win the dan4vols v. Dawson avatar throw down war?
