Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay Bucs) discussion

Pete Carroll failed at the NFL first, then dominated College Football.

From 1984-1999, Caroll was in the NFL.

Now he has a 83-15 record, & 2 National Championships.

Thank you, Proved my point. Is gruden the answer? I dont know. You may be right, He might be able to pull it off. I just love UT and want to see us as a national power again.

No that means the NFL and College Football are 2 different games. The coaches mentioned are great college football coaches. they failed in the NFL they came back to coach college and are successful. my point is being good at one doesnt automaticaly make you good at the other. You are dealing with different types of players. Is Gruden quallified for this, maybe , maybe not. No one knows

The defense in the NFL compared to the defenses in college are like War and Peace compared to a coloring book.

0 college championships
you missed the poin yet again. winning in one does not translate into winning at the other

So? The SEC is the best conference in college. Hiring anyone that isn't an SEC coach or an NFLer would essentially be hiring someone that's coaching at an inferior level. At least Gruden has proven he can handle a job that's tougher than UT.

theres only 2 coaches with national championships in college and super bowl wins - jimmie johnson and barry switzer. Your Turn
You didn't answer the question. Name some coaches that were successful at the pro level, went to college, and failed.

Hell, Bill Walsh went to freaking Stanford and got them a conference championship when he was like 94 years old.

Thank you, Proved my point.
No, I don't think he did. It seems you are trying to say being successful in the NFL doesn't mean you will be successful in college. We are trying to say the NFL is considerably more difficult. If you can win in the NFL, there is a good chance you can do it in college.

How did I prove your point? Carroll didn't make it in the NFL, yet has had more success this decade than any coach in College Football. My point, the NFL is tougher to coach in. If you can make it in the NFL, you can make it in college. I can show you many NFL failures that have dominated the college game. Can you show me one good NFL coach who has failed as a College Coach?

Providing an example of an NFL winner that failed in college would be a good way to support this argument.

Mike Sherman did alright with Green Bay, but I think it's fairly obvious the team underachieved during a time when the NFC was as weak as it's ever been. He's been awful at A&M. I still wouldn't count him, because he was fired by the Packers.

I'll reserve any thought of his college success right now. This is his first year at A&M. Not many coaches come in & win on day one. Carroll went 6-6 at USC his first year.

He'll be a failure. He'll get fired. But, he was fired by the Packers, too. So really that's not a good example, either.

I don't think we have seen enough of Sherman at A&M to close the deal, although I don't think he is special. However, I wouldn't call him a pro success.

Fair enough. I'm actually looking for coaches that were great pro coaches and miserable college coaches. Chances are, you won't find one because you don't get hired to the NFL if you are an awful college coach, and you don't drop down if you are a successful NFL coach.

Either way, the possibility of him coming here is dwindling with every win the Buccaneers have. They're 6-3, with a great shot of winning the NFC South.

In a very weak conference 5-2 in the NFC SOUTH. How does that translate to the SEC? You usually dont win SEC championships with that Plus they still have half a season to go and are second in their division.
Yes I'll concede he is a good NFL coach, took Raiders to Super Bowl and then won it with Dungys team, but does that really make a case for him as our coach?

Uh.....YES!!!

I'm not really sure that is true. I think that if he wants an NFL job, he gets an NFL job, and I would be surprised if he was canned regardless of the outcome of this season unless they lose out or something extreme. The only way he could possibly be UT's coach is if he wants to try something new.

I wish KC could've held on. Back to back losses would've got the fans chippy. I think the X-factor here is whether Monte Kiffin leaves to coach with Lane. Add that to the fact they have no long term solution at QB and TB is rebuilding come next year. We will just have to wait and see. This year may be the closest he comes to making a run in the playoffs if the above happens and I don't see them going far in playoffs even this year. Take the money and run.

My uncle and aunt live in Dunedin, Florida. It's close to Tampa Bay. I talk to my uncle 4 or 5 times a week.

My uncle says they are hearing the Gruden and Tennessee rumors more and more. He said half the fans like Gruden and the other half want him out because of his mouth and his treatment of the players.

My uncle said that he thinks Gruden would make a great college coach because you can't talk to the pro's the way Gruden does. Maybe, the college kids would listen to him. I have no idea. From what my uncle has told me, Gruden is hard nosed and expects 100% on every play.

I think it would be a far stretch to bring him to Knoxville.
I've been surprised before.

The only good that came from yet another KC loss is Tzarl Peterson and Germ Edwards are one step closer to getting the axe.
