Johnny Majors speaks on Fulmer being named AD

Majors has every right to be pissed about what happened to him. Fulmer definitely worked behind his back to take his job. That's just the truth.

However, it is unhealthy for Majors to hold a grudge. It's bad for his physical and mental health just like it is for anyone.
And you have documented proof. I am thinking no you do not. That's just the truth.

Not many folks on here are old enough to know about this side of the Majors story. The one thing I have wondered about over the years is; if the athletic dept. is self funded, why did the academic salary freeze effect the salaries of the athletic dept?
I also seem to remember rumors of excessive alcohol use. (folks bring up Coach Wyatt, ect.) Now, Phil may have been stirring the pot, but as remember Coach Majors was behind his problem big time.

I remember. But I recognize it was 25 years and it's time to move on. Bottom line is it was the right move to give Fulmer the job and that's why it still stings Johnny

It was a different financial environment. There was a lot of comingling of funds. Donations were not segmented as athletic or academic funds. Alcohol was involved and may have been the courage behind Majors challenging Dickey. One of my very best friends was in the room and I had it confirmed at the very top of those involved.

OK but how does it benefit us to have a bitter old man around. He's taking a shot at AD day 1. He needs to grow up one of these days.

He was asked to comment. Seems to me you're grasping for something that's not there.

"My allegiance is with the University of Tennessee and the players," Majors told The Tennessean. "I cheer for them no matter what. Who the athletic director is does not affect that in any way."
Majors, 82, declined to comment beyond that.

Of course Majors was pissed. He was pissed (off of the half pint in his hip pocket) all the time.

And it was his liquid courage driving his alligator mouth one too many times in front of people who would not have another drunk Vols football coach making national headlines like Bowden Wyatt did throwing a sports reporter in a hotel pool at a SEC coaches convention. That and showing up smelling of drink at practice that comments were made if a match were struck it'd blow up the place.

Johnny Majors got his own self fired for good cause. What was Fulmer supposed to do? Say, "Uh no we dint smell nuttin on Coach's breath at practice". Or say, "No. I don't want to be coach".

All you guys still beating the "Fulmer was a traitor to Johnny" drum just refuse to accept you are wrong. Johnny did it to himself.

THIS RIGHT HERE^^^^^

Johnny Majors is one of my favorite Vols of all time.
But--I went to high school with several guys that played for him in the late 70s early 80s.
One guys parents were so displeased with Johnny they pulled their son off the team and out of school.
Johnny was his own worst enemy, bolstered by Jack Daniels.

With that being said, he needs to bury the damn hatchet and put this silly fued to bed.
UT needs him now more than when Johnny came marching home.
He could work wonders as an ambassador for UT, alongside Fulmer.

And the Tennessean portrays a decades old comment as news.

JM did fine with the news. To get robbed of your dream job by a trusted friend, well that's tough. He should have beat Ar and SC. Maybe the gumps too, I can't remember. You never know with the gumps. Sometimes they are good, usually they are bad.

A grudge is harder on it's carrier.

Here's what Phil took from Johnny. His absolute dream job and place he loved above others. Johnny Majors could have stayed at Pitt and became a Hall of Fame coach but he left a national championship program he built to come and rebuild the disaster that had unfolded at UT when Battle didn't recruit.

Not only that, coaching salaries exploded in the SECCG era. The move on his job by Fulmer cost Majors millions of dollars. He had a roster full of NFL players and UT was humming when he was let go. He would have won at a high level for the foreseeable future.

Majors finished 5th, 8th and 14th in the nation with 2 SEC titles and 2 Big 4 at the time bowl wins in his last 3 full years. He had Heath Shuler and a loaded for bear roster returning and was fired. Can you imagine that happening today?

if that makes you feel better, good for you, I knew John's dad while in sewanee. Met all of the sons while there. They are good people, why dont we just shut our mouths and support the boys in knoxville. This beef is between these two men and they dont need your opinion. And just because you choose to call someone a drunk shows me all i need to know about you. This is exactly why this mess is happening today. We need to stay together and stop snipping each other. TROLL

Who do you think recruited that roster? Was johnny around to recruit Peyton? Tee? Witten? Price? Joey Kent? Al Wilson? Etc, etc, ad nauseum.

I felt terrible when they let johnny go. I was a teen when I first met him and he became bigger than life. Hell I disliked cpf for a while because I felt like I should remain loyal to johnny. 30 years later I realize the facts. Johnny was gonna be johnny, and his actions brought about his dismissal.

I would love nothing more than to see johnny and Phil bury the hatchet. I know that cpf has no ill will toward cjm, to my limited knowledge never did.

That narrative has a lot of people that would argue the contrary.

Loooks like CPF has held a few grudges himself. I would trust him as far as I could throw him and I am an ancient old woman. Johnny has a right to feel as he does. If drinking is a problem then look at the General and Bowden Wyatt. They had their little meetings every afternoon and consumed their share of the happy juice....Let's get a coach and get on with winning like we are used to.

You're another that is dug in with the Majors bashing and the Fulmer swinging.

I’ve chimed in that it was time for Fulmer to go when he was. I’ve stated that even in our NC season, there were way too many instances when he was OUTCOACHED. I can do that AND appreciate BOTH Fulmer and Majors for their positive contributions. I’ve defended both when extremist narratives turn their gun barrels. You’re just a crusty inflexible Majors swinging version of what you’re accusing me. Get better. :)
