Majors has every right to be pissed about what happened to him. Fulmer definitely worked behind his back to take his job. That's just the truth.

However, it is unhealthy for Majors to hold a grudge. It's bad for his physical and mental health just like it is for anyone.

If going undefeated while Majors recovered from heart surgery is "working behind his back," you are correct. You are also correct that Majors is unhealthy if he holds a grudge.

It seems that he is facing the truth after 3 decades. Fulmer did not stab him. Majors stabbed himself. He told the Athletic Director that he wanted a raise that matched the raise that Wade Houston got in basketball. Dickey told him that he could not do it because there was a current salary freeze for academic employees and he just could not pull it off. Majors said, "If I can't get the raise I will quit!" Dickey rose, shook his hand, thanked him for his service to UT, and announced his resignation. THOSE ARE FACTS!

Don’t really know if Fulmer did or not. However, Johnny seems to still feel that way. I’d also like to see this axe buried. Both are well respected. Johnny is my all time favorite Vol. He was robbed of the Heisman because Hornung had the ND pedigree. I was at UT when he came home. Just loved it!

This is not exactly the way I heard it at the time, but close. I will say that Majors had some other non-football related problems going on aside from his surgery.

Other schools were courting Phillip to be their head coach. He knew that the Administration might make a change and if it did, he wanted to be at UT rather than another school.

Majors remains bitter, but he refuses to acknowledge his own shortcomings that brought his downfall.

Of course Majors was pissed. He was pissed (off of the half pint in his hip pocket) all the time.

And it was his liquid courage driving his alligator mouth one too many times in front of people who would not have another drunk Vols football coach making national headlines like Bowden Wyatt did throwing a sports reporter in a hotel pool at a SEC coaches convention. That and showing up smelling of drink at practice that comments were made if a match were struck it'd blow up the place.

Johnny Majors got his own self fired for good cause. What was Fulmer supposed to do? Say, "Uh no we dint smell nuttin on Coach's breath at practice". Or say, "No. I don't want to be coach".

All you guys still beating the "Fulmer was a traitor to Johnny" drum just refuse to accept you are wrong. Johnny did it to himself.

Ludicrous. Absolutely hilarious from the Currie prospect. Everyone wanted him fired and when it happens they begin whining he was torpedoed. I reckon some folks ain’t happy unless they’re unhappy.

Yeah, I am glad to see Fulmer step in, and I would like to think that in both situations he had the best interest of the University in mind moreso than his own self-interests. (I am in no way a Fulmerite) I will be interested to see where the football program will be in 2 - 3 years, based on the results from yesterday.

I think we are likely on a better footing now, if only because the Haslam stranglehold has been lessened a bit. However, I cannot say that I am not disappointed that we had someone on the hook who probably would have turned things around like Bruce Pearl did in basketball, and now that opportunity is apparently being thrown away. Yes, I realize that relationship could have ended ugly, like the one with Pearl, but it would have been fun while it lasted, I believe.

to hell with the past...it's the future I'm concerned about...let dead dogs lie...it is better for the program to have Vol All Americans/legends walking the sideline...no matter how old...yep, I like Johnny, always did...that's just me...:)

Not many folks on here are old enough to know about this side of the Majors story. The one thing I have wondered about over the years is; if the athletic dept. is self funded, why did the academic salary freeze effect the salaries of the athletic dept?
I also seem to remember rumors of excessive alcohol use. (folks bring up Coach Wyatt, ect.) Now, Phil may have been stirring the pot, but as remember Coach Majors was behind his problem big time.

Chris Lowe absolutely destroyed this conspiracy yesterday. CPF went to NC State at Currie's request with Currie to try and pitch UT and seal that deal. The story is total and absolute FAKE NEWS BS.
