I ran into Johnny Majors at the airport Sunday and had a chance to chat with him for a few minutes. It was my first chance to meet him and I was geniunely impressed. Although he's looking old, he is still sharp and excited about coaching. He had just returned from attending a coach's clinic in Oregon.

We only had a few moments, but he had positive things to say about the direction of the program. I'm glad to see him back involved somewhat with the program. I always thought it was a shame that he felt ostrecized from the program when Fulmer replaced him.

It's not everyday you get to spend some time with a Vols legend! :p

First time I ever met coach Majors was at a coaches clinic in Atlanta back in 05' or 06' and former all American vol anthony Hancock was introduced him to me. I was overwhelmed, I met two great vols in one day!!

He was very kind - I said: "Hey Coach Majors, how are you doing?". He immediately stuck out his hand and asked me my name. Then we had a good chat on our way back to our cars.

Yes sir he is very kind. When I met him I was kinda skidish at first because I've always heard he was a grumpy ol cuss and but he was kind like my grandfather. He did the same thing with me that he did with you. He stuck out his hand ask me "what's your name son" "are you enjoying the clinic, I see that you have met one of my former players" I got his autograph as well. Man that was a great day!!

While a student at UT, my wife worked in the Athletic offices as a secretary to Gus Manning. Coach Majors was always nice to her and called her by her first name after he met her for the first time. Coach Devoe, however..........

There are lot of phony reports about Johnny's personality and drinking habits. He said some harsh things about the alumni and had words a few times with Dickey, but he is a genuinely nice man with an engaging personality.

I think maybe he has finally gotten over the way he was let go, since both of the culprits are no longer with the University. Glad to see that.

Having him involved in the program will hopefully lead to good things. Glad he's still sharp.

He is definitely sharp in his memories. My Mom was that way into her well advanced years.

I was 10 years old, at a Tennessee vs Purdue hoops game at Stokley. I had to pee and my mom told me to go ahead by myself. I entered the mens room and I was the only one there. Mid stream, Coach Majors walked in and used the stall 2 down to the right. He said "hey there young man". All I could muster up was "hi". I sprinted back to my seat to tell my mom. And yes I did wash my hands. Now every time my mom sees him on tv, she tells whoever shes with..."my son peed right next to him."

And before you ask.... i didn't look!

Saw him at last year's Kentucky Derby. I was a little drunk (it was the Derby after all), and saw him walking by. I recognized his face but couldn't place it. I asked who he was and he said "well some people tell me I look like Johnny Majors" with a big smile on his face. It caught me off guard as in my non-sober state and he just kept walking. Took me a few minutes to realize it was actually him. I've been mad at myself ever since for not getting a picture with a Volunteer legend!

Gosh, I must be getting advanced in age and still sharp for my advancing years. I was in UT with John and Mary Lynn. He was nice when he was the star on the field. It is sad that so many "bad" things have happened since those days....He had to leave Tennessee to get the glory as a coach he should have had here. I will not ever have good feelings for Phil for the way all that came down....For an oldie I can still write.....type too. (He is older than I am by a couple of years, but that does not make him senile and ready for a nursing home.)

Majors may have been an alcoholic and a gruff SOB but no way he infected your hands. :whistling:

Coach Majors is a great man. My mother has been acting as his personal assistant for the last year and a half while my father makes all of his travel arrangements. He has eaten dinner several times at my house with my family and you cannot get him to ever stop talking. He has so many amazing stories starting from his playing days up until the present. He is friends with everyone in football and even runs his own coaching clinics sponsored by nike with attendees like Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, Mike Tomlin etc. He is extremely sharp for his age and is always looking to help other people. For example: He writes everything down and always rewards people for their hard work. He has been known on several occasions to call hotels and restaurants after hes visited them and talk to management about the great work of specific people that he mentions by name. Johnny Majors is a class act and will always be one of the greatest to ever put on the orange and white. Go Vols.
