John Ward

My phone's current (and forever) ringtone. GBO, and thank you, Mr. Ward.....the greatest announcer ever to out voice to microphone.

I linked an audio file of that call on here one time and a bunch of people did the same thing you did. A couple of years ago, I worked in an office with an Alabama fan, Auburn fan, and Florida fan. Needless to say, I played that file every morning. The funny thing was, as much as they all disliked the Vols, they all enjoyed hearing John Ward make the call. Heck, they even began asking where the clip was if I forgot to play it every morning.

"The officials mark the ball at the ____ 32 yard line, where it will be 2nd and 6 for ______ on a drive from their 26 yard line toward the south end of the field...in a game with 6:41 left in the second quarter...Tennessee ahead by a score of 7-0, on a bright, sunny October 6th at Neyland Stadium with a capacity crowd of ___. _____ brings them up to the line....two receivers split to the right....etc. etc. etc.

If you think about it, what he decscribes here is exactly what you would do if you were sitting in the stands. Where is the ball, what's the down, how much for a first, how much time is on the clock, what's the score, the sun is in my eyes, who's lined up where on the field. I can see myself at the stadium during the game looking for the exact things he points out.
As someone mentioned, JW was so good at the detail. It wasnt a pass - it was a bounce pass. It wasnt a run or a run to the right, it was a run over right tackle to the __ yd line where it will be _ down and _ to go. It wasnt a shot by the guard, it was a high arching shot from the top of the key......bottoms. Pure attention to detail. None of the "we gotta hunker down, dawgs" like Munson (well, no s__t, Larry. That's what everyone is thinking).

Probably the worst part about him leaving was that we started turning on the television announcers and realizing how truely bad they are.

John Ward was the greatest. I liked him just as much as I did any of the players and we lost a lot when he retired. I feel for anyone who has to follow that act.

I was just making it up as I typed...but that is the way he described the game for us-as close as I could remember his style. A person could listen to John Ward and be almost as well informed as if you had been at the game in person. There are not many like him...and most are bad...as you said. I miss Ward more than anything in the past of Tennessee sports. We were so lucky to have him for as long as we did.
