John Ward had much more class than Munson, and he never would have demeaned the other teams players, coaches, or fans with anything even close to the hobnail boot comment. Ward, in fact, was so fair that when an opposing team had a big play his voice would raise and you could hear excitement in his voice.... at first that was annoying to me, but as my knowledge of him grew i realized he was trying to be the consummate professional... nearly every single one of his peers agreed.

What a way for John Ward to go? A perfect 13-0 NC season. His last words during a game - "The National Champions are clad in Big Orange."

Amen. I miss him.

One of my favorite calls was the field goal at the end of one of the Florida games. (And I'm working from memory here !)

It's up.

Munson was good - he was passionate about Ga football and enthusiastic in his play calling - but he was by no means a better announcer than Ward. Ward painted a picture on the radio, something Munson didnt do as well. I'll take listening to Ward any day over Larry.

"To the thirty-five down to the thirty, twenty-five, twenty, fifteen, ten. He carries the ball all the way for what? TOUCHDOWN...BIG ORANGE! Phillips running through, around, over and underneath defenders for South Carolina takes the ball all the way home for a miraculous touchdown..."

"Manning sneaks, inches forward, falls down, has not--no whistle yet, Manning rolling to the right side, motions to throw down into the end zone, and it is TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!"

Both are from the Chesney song, "Touchdown Tennessee"...that thing will choke you up! I tried to attach it to this message but the upload kept failing (not sure why...it's an MP3 and is only a little over 3 MB).

Best in the business. Ever. No one will ever be able to match, or even come close to, what that man could do behind a mic.

He is the greatest I've ever heard. Before nearly every game was on TV, he was our only connection to the game if you didn't have a ticket. Always made it interesting and i really miss him. I can't stand to listen to Kesling.

Was watching the 10th Annv. DVD of the 98 season and listening to Ward was what made the video! My wife, an LSU fan, thought he was obnoxious. I just turned it up!

Love ya JW!!

To young to remember him, but from the posts on this board it sounds like he was the king of kings in regards to commentary.

Ward was superior in every way. Truly no one can match or imitate him.

But why Keisling? WTF was/is that all about? We went from Dom Perignon to a defizzed can of week old Pepsi. :realmad:

They could have thrown ten high school announcers names into a hat and picked one that couldn't have been much worse. :bash:

sorry you missed out. It was common practice to turn down the tv and have the radio going during most games
