In the media and on internet forums, we usually hear only of ex-Vols gone bad in their lives post playing days........ My friend, Dr. John Murphy chose a different path.
After playing high school football in Jackson, Tn. he played and started at tight end for coaches Battle and Majors for the Vols. Subsequently, he went to UT med school and followed that with an orthopedic residency at the renown Campbell's clinic in Memphis.
John was in practice here in Florence, Alabama for the last 17 years as an orthopedic surgeon. He was an outstanding doctor and person. He was also loyal to his Vols, but in a nonconfronting way, so that even the Auburn and Alabama supporters loved John. He did a lot of volunteer work with area schools and encouraged many young people in the Shoals Area.
Sadly, he died prematurely yesterday in Nashville of complications of a bleeding ulcer. He was a great example for the medical profession as well as the University of Tennessee.
:salute:
