“I am just embracing the whole teacher role now and trying to show all the younger guys how things are supposed to be done,” Kelly said. “I know what Coach (Robert) Gillespie, Coach (Butch) Jones and Coach (Larry) Scott expect from us, so I’m trying to hold all these guys to a higher standard, as well. I want these guys to hear what I’m saying and I want them to be able to feel me, as well. It’s kind of a lot of tough love with the offensive guys and the defensive guys and I just get on everyone.

“Also, to improve my game, too, because I know I’m going to be taking a lot more reps than I have in the past year. So that’s really what I’ve been focusing on (this spring).”

Behind Kelly on the depth chart is Carlin Fils-Aime, Taeler Dowdy, Stedman Love, Jayson Sparks and Chip Omer. Ty Chandler, Trey Coleman and Timothy Jordan also signed in the 2017 recruiting class.

I'm not sure I want him coaching. I would rather hear about him being 100% focused on taking the next step for himself being 1st Team SEC at the RB position after the season ends. UT pays those position coaches big 6 figure salaries to get the job done.

I know these are the usual offseason articles and stories. Culture and accountability are influenced by upperclassmen. I get that. Just hoping JK and CFA are laser focused on being the unquestionable cream of the SEC crop themselves for 2017. That should do motivation aplenty.

A great way to improve on a skill is teaching it to others.

In my career I have had to teach a few classes and done some coaching. When you have to coach/teach a subject it requires that you learn the subject to the nth degree. Otherwise your students will know that your faking it and loose respect for you. Teaching is the best way to learn. And this team needs Kelly as a leader.

I'm pretty sure that Kelly was in a coaching position because Coach Robert G. was working with the special teams during that period of practice. Obviously JK is not coaching the RB's like that often.

The Vols need another frosh phenom like Jamal Lewis to make a run for championships, but does anyone see this happening any time soon?:p

Kelly and Jennings both play with attitude and heart while being extremely talented. A great combination.

Damn, when you lay the depth chart out like that, especially with Carlin in a boot, its pretty scary... Hopefully Carlin will play a duel role with Kelly and Ty will come in ready to step up and WORK... we will need him desperately.

He's talking about being the senior member and leader of his position group, not being an actual coach. And it's a very good thing and strongly encouraged by any coach worth his salt.

What? Have you not read through VN today? Why, we got 4-5 walkons at RB, we're in great shape, certainly better than last year. 😁
