I thought John Kelly always did his best at Tennessee.
Didn't he lead the entire SEC in rushing for the first 6 games of the season last year?
He seemed to run so hard that everyone used to say, "He runs 'angry.'"
His body of work was enough to show league scouts what he could offer so he opted to advance.
He could have run 1,500 yards for us last season and the team still would have finished 4-8.
When a player moves on, it' something to celebrate. It means their time at Tennessee gave as much
to them as they gave to Tennessee while they played.
Yes, it would be nice to have the most talented players always stay for their senior year,
but times have changed. It's best to just realize that to avoid letting it get you so bitter like that.
Besides, it's not a bad thing at all for recruiting when talented high school prospects see Vols
who play the same position go to the NFL because:
1. It shows they can do it too
and
2. The spot that player used to occupy on the roster can be filled.
As an old-school fan, I can see where you're coming from, but as tough a pill as it is to swallow,
like it or not, that's just the way it is these days.
Remember how excited we all were when Peyton decided to stay?
Even back then it was somewhat a surprise because he could have punched his ticket as the top draft pick or at least
the top 5 a year early if he wanted to. Players had already started to leave early years before then, so it's not like it's
unheard of, you know?d
Let's celebrate John Kelly and all the other VFLs who contributed their time and talents to Tennessee while they were here
to the extent it earned them that opportunity to play professionally. After all, one of the big factors of them getting drafted
was because of what the scouts saw of their performance while they played for Tennessee, so if they didn't give their all while they were at Tennessee, it's likely they wouldn't be where they are today in the NFL.
