In terms of things that actually matter, such as getting the offense back on the field, we actually have one of the better defenses in the nation. Before the Vandy game, we were ranked #14 in defensive efficiency in the entire nation. Vandy's garbage time touchdowns (and weak overall rating) dropped us down a bit, but overall, our defense has outperformed.

We lost to Oklahoma because our offense scored 0 in the 2nd half.

We lost to Alabama because our offense couldn't score more than 14 on Bama's D.

The one and only game you can blame on the defense (and even then it's a bit of a debate) is Florida. And our defense played incredible 95% of that game. We had a few lapses on critical 4th down plays and that was it. But of course, our coaches made major blunders throughout the game, as well. And then the offense got too conservative on the next to last possession of the game. And then the officials for some reason forgot they were supposed to stop the clock for 1st downs. So there are quite a few factors in that particular loss.

Meanwhile, in spite of the fact that we run an uptempo no huddle, hurry-up offense, we've held nearly every single opponent this season to a relatively low score (by that opponent's standards).

We held Oklahoma to 17 in regulation. Have you seen Oklahoma play lately? We probably could've held them to 10 if our offense could've moved the ball in the 2nd half.

We held Bama to 19. You might want to look over Alabama's game this season, because you'll quickly realize no one else has come close to doing that.

Thank you...... in the four games we lost...... I blame the 2nd half offense more than the defense....

Regarding John Jancek's future at Tennessee, it looks pretty bright to date. Sure, there have been some hiccups here and there, but overall defensive production is up compared to before he came to TN. Oh, and by the way, recruiting hasn't really sucked either.

It would be very difficult to do worse than before Jancek was here. Doesn't mean we're playing at a championship level though. I don't even know what level to call our play before Butch.

Time of possession. Unable to sustain drives and run the clock. Snapping the ball with 15-20 secs on the clock when playing conservative.

The hurry-up isn't good for running out the clock.

A better OL will fix this.

I don't think it happens because Butch is so insular with his staff but why couldn't he hire a highly sought after defensive coordinator if he wanted to? Tennessee has shown they will pay well above market value for assistants (Monte made $2 million in '09) and Butch has some stability built up now in his 4th season with a contract extension and slow but steady improvement shown. A new DC would also have a lot of experienced talent to work with right away especially on the def line. I have to think that all of these factors would make for an attractive job for someone with ambition.

Given the talent?? There were 3 seniors on the entire D. One of them was a second year JUCO transfer who really made progress. The other two were the two least talented players on our D.

All that 18-19 year old five star talent that was decimated by injuries by season's end?

Come on man. Give me 5 upperclassmen you see playing on Sundays and I'll say you have a valid point. Kirkland, Phillips, KMac, Tuttle, Gaulden all were hurt AND they are freshmen in the SEC.

I disagree with you. I love this defense because they get nasty and OVERachieve when they have to.

Time of possession was pretty much equal for both teams. Our offense didn't put our defense in any worse situations than theirs. The difference was they're defense was able to consistently make plays in the 2nd half. And that is due to a good system

I don't have a strong affection for Jancek, but I can tell you that I think most of your comments are just wrong, We held Alabama and a few other teams to their lowest totals of the year, I think our third down defense was in the top 15 in the country, At various times we started 3 freshmen on the defensive line, two freshmen at linebacker, two freeman at defensive back. I think we certainly have one of the youngest defenses in the country. Next year our defense will be all kinds of NASTY, so just stop,

My sources are telling me that Jancek's replacement will be Butch's choice from among Monte, Peyton, Chief, and Gruden.

Butch is almost certainly coaching for his job next year. That's generally a tough sell to promising coordinators.

I'll give you $1,000 dollars if you show me proof that we ever started three freshmen on the D line and two true freshmen at DB this season. Any game.

It will be a critical year for Tennessee football but coaching for his job? He is about to get an extension with a raise from what we've heard in the media.
