The death of the K-State family | The Collegian

John Currie is an Awful Hire as Vols AD; Here are 4 Reasons Why - Page 3

This might be old news to many of you, but I found these items tonight after I finished my reading for school (I was hoping to see some good news about a new football coach, but nothing ... yet!)

After looking at these articles, it is really amazing how anyone who researched this guy could have been confident that he was the best AD available. K-State fans have despised Currie for years, and his “let them eat cake” attitude toward the fan base in Manhattan described in the first article was pretty much exactly what we got from him here. Currie’s reputation among coaches not named Schiano was (is) horrible - This ensures that few coaches worth a darn were likely to come to UT to work for this guy.

Also, I know it might seem silly, but when Currie stayed out on the field after that loss (I think it was the UGA game) and posed with his “mean boy” scowl in front of the cameras, I started disliking him intensely. He took no action for weeks even though the writing was on the wall. He did nothing to restore confidence even though we were a fan base in turmoil. No leadership. Just arrogance.

And it will only cost us about $6 million -- so silver lining there.

Ah little Jimmy Haslam. The mosquito ***k who yearns to be a helicopter ***k.

Little Jimmy is such a damn loser. He wants to surround himself with ball washers that do his bidding and tell him how great he is rather than what he needs to hear: that he doesn’t know s*** about football.

So...One of the more believable scenarios of what went on is that Haslam fashions himself as the "King of UT" and flexed his muscle to install Currie. Fulmer, Davenport...and the other boosters may have wanted Gruden...or whomever...but NOT Schiano. Currie flexing HIS muscle and backed by Haslam in his opinion....went and tried to hire Schiano. Bev didn't like it even before the fan outrage so she "forced" him to tell Schiano "no". Currie ..undeterred and still being backed by Haslam continued on his search...with Bev's blessing as well...knowing SHE would have to sign off ultimately on any hire. After Currie went rogue to see Leach Bev and the other boosters made their stand against Haslam and fired Currie despite objections no doubt from Haslam.

Bev, the other boosters and Fulmer have now "taken over" and are basically saying screw you to Haslam. Is this about right?

Sounds right. But the fans also played a huge role. The legislators and boosters don’t take a stand without a unified Vol Nation.

I'll wait till the smoke clears a little more but I'm not buying the heroic slant for Bev. I think just wants to be on the winners side, whoever that may be. She looked scared to death at the presser.

Thanks. I'm having trouble keeping up with all the twists and turns. SO....I wonder where Peyton fits into all this?

Is he a Haslam lackey too? He's always been a vocal supporter of Fulmer....or is this more "Hey Mr. Haslam...we don't want any trouble...but WE...need to what's best for the program"!?

It was foreseen. In fact, on the kstate message board, a Tennessee fan asked them about this way back in February. Long thread.

P.S. I just realized that I know Kirk Schultz (current president of Washington State) personally. I was reading that article and I thought "I wonder if that is the Kirk Schultz that I know." It was. so I guess now I can be an insider/troll.

The theory is that Haslam will try and get Manning an NFL franchise or a piece of one. Therefore, Peyton aligned with Haslam.

Sorry, Peyton, but if your personal goals conflict with the greater good of the program then screw you.

Looking back, I should have known he was clueless when he kept referring to the fans as "Big Orange Nation." I know "Go Big Orange" is common but I don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to Vol fans as big orange nation lol

Bevs as big an efff up as currie. Right before currie lands leach, she ruins that.
Then she thinks she saved herself by throwing in w fulmer.

If she knew what she was doing, she would have let the leach deal roll. As long as money/buyout made sense... and then suspended currie and appointed fulmer as AD. Citing the rougue behavior as cause but looking like a hero honoring leachs deal. If it didnt work out w leach no prob it wasnt fulmers hire, easy firing and its that much easier to hire the next coach.

It is funny that this case may actually result in Davenport being fired or closely examined too. Essentially we fired Currie for going rogue and running with the Haslams, yet if Currie is successful in showing that he was acting within authority given by Davenport then that puts her in an extremely bad position. It almost, if not, makes her look like a liar. I was just starting to like her if it is true she stood up to Haslam.

Apparently there's a lot more Jimmy doesn't know anything about. Like his business - the one being sued for fraud. With one guy having pled guilty and singing like a canary; it's not looking good for Jimmy. Either he was a part of it, or so incompetent in his management that a scam was run right under his nose. Not a good look either way.

I've been vocal since the news broke that either Fulmer or Blackburn were the right choice. But once the establishment got behind Currie most fans fell in line behind him. I just never could, I always thought he was a bad fit here.

I wish Fulmer was the AD in charge of this search

Manning silent, Blackburn never got formal interview

Blackburn left UTC and seems to have disappeared. If he has had a meltdown, I can't see how he would have survived at UT. Fulmer was the only choice from the start.

Well, Peyton did say that he was "all in" for Butch Jones. "ALL IN." Hopefully he now sees what many others saw some time ago. Jones was very good at verbal gymnastics, cliches, and buzzwords, but he was a horrible coach. He was a "not ready for prime time" coach, to borrow a line from the old SNL show.
