John Currie of K State Hired as AD

I agree with KB above in that Blackburn seemed like a good guy, been around, had a lot of people locally in his corner so I was not opposed had he been selected and I believe he may have been treated less than a UT grad should have been treated. That said, Currie fulfills my major consideration, he has prior connections to the institution and community, he has experience so I am not opposed to the fellow and wish him the greatest successes in the days ahead.

Didn't feel that Currie was a realistic candidate. Now that he's reality, I'm more than happy with the choice. The man handles his business and doesn't back down...we refer to that as difficult when we're clamoring for another candidate not noted for kowtowing. :wink2:

Awfully optimistic about Currie given some of the things coming from KState about how he had issues getting along with his coaches (Bball coach Frank Martin who left for SCar a few years back and current legend football head coach Bill Snyder) and considering he was Hamilton's right hand man and counted among his accomplishments handling the searches of the hiring of both Todd Raleigh and Lane Kiffin when he left for the KState job.

I certainly hope you're right, I hope he comes in and is great, is here for a decade or two and leads all our programs to great success and championships. But early on, while doing a little research, this is not a homerun hire imho. Have no choice but to hope it proves to be.

i didn't say it was his original opinion only that we he was discussing it. We'll know pretty quickly how this hire works out. he could be looking for a new baseball and football coach next year.

his track records is not good. i would not be surprised if nothing changes.

Said one of the beat writers tweeted out yesterday now that Currie is gone that some top notch coaches who wouldn't consider KState previously due to Currie being there "were now back in play".

Who knows what the real deal is and what some of the back stories are. But one thing's for sure, the general if not majority response out of Manhattan, Kansas appears to be jubilation that Currie is no longer their AD. Sure hope those sentiments are misplaced.

Frank Martin is a walking "issue" (noted Bobby Knight level hothead) and anyone observing a Snyder interview would go to the fridge with the word "crotchety" hanging over their head in a thought balloon. Prepared to be wrong (as always) but my impression is that this was a case of someone not being a yes man to them. In Snyder's case, his longtime success had afforded him de facto self AD status and anyone bucking that was going to irritate his ear hairs. Reaction from Kansas State gossip mongers is typical "don't want him...good riddance" parting gifts IMO. Nothing I've personally noted has swayed my opinion that this is a strong hire.

I think they're delusional. Kansas State never has and never will be a destination job. They lucked out with Snyder. Any other successful hire is merely putting time towards a better gig...IMO.

No concern that Currie was Hamilton's right hand/hatchet man and his involvement/taking point in the coaching searches which led to Todd Raleigh and Lane Kiffin? Then throw in that he ran off a very successful bball coach in Frank Martin (hothead or no, who cares) in favor of Bruce Weber (who's gonna miss the NCAA tourney for the third straight year) and his problems getting along with Snyder, who's the only reason the football program has ever been on the map. Saban is a hothead, has a God complex and is surely difficult to get along with, but any AD down there better damn we'll figure out how to keep him happy. I don't know, I see a few red flags here. Currie has to be able to attract top coaches when the time comes .... will he be able to here given his reputation in that area?

On paper Currie checks most of all the boxes, he's a great search firm hire. But I think there are some concerns here and his hiring in no way unifies the fan base.

You don't get to blame him for Kiffin and Raleigh without giving him credit for Pearl. Kiffin I still view as a wash and pretty much everyone cares more about bball than baseball, so his UT hiring record is fine by me.

He was a divisive figure, many didn't think he was a viable option, left Tennessee after having fractured some relationships.

Some committee members weren't caught up to speed, only learned of hiring of Currie yesterday morning. Some were kept out of the loop.

Davenport insisted on P5 AD experience and got enough committee members to agree with her.

One thing Currie has to do when he gets here is to try and mend some fences from his past time here.

In December, Fulmer had no desire to be involved, didn't want the job, was fully behind DB. Was contacted and told he needed to be in the mix since DB wasn't.

That quote alone tells you all you need to know about how irrational KState fans and beat writers are (I know, I know, pot meet kettle). No top notch coaches are considering KState no matter who is AD. KState is a traditional midling program that can only afford to pay big time coach money because of the great financial work done by...Currie. They may be genuinely happy to see him leave. That doesn't make them smart.

he's going to be replacing a few coaches quite soon. it's going to be his 1st test. we'll know if 2-3 years how this guy does.

Hamilton was great at raising money too. how did he do with coaches while he was here?

Serano is the only questionable one.

i said we'll know about this guy in 2-3 years. he could be replacing 2 coaches in couple of years. serano and Butch (whether he leaves or is fired) either way, we'll know quite soon
