John Currie of K State Hired as AD

I'm sure the guy will be a good AD, but Blackburn has proven to be one of the best in the business at selecting coaches (look at UTC's athletics) I hope it works out, but I'm disappointed.

You didn't catch the sarcasm, did you?
As for putting together a better resume, could it be because Blackburn waited under presumption he would get job after Hamilton, whereas he could have left long ago and established a better resume if not misled into thinking he would be rewarded for staying so long and being groomed?

Guess he presumed wrong? Shouldn't that cause you to question his decision making?

I'm just baffled by all the hate. This guy checks every box on all the wishlists:

UT ties
Young, well-regarded
Strong fundraiser
Prior success at the highest level

The only knocks:
His name isn't David Blackburn
Bruce Weber might not have been a homerun hire.

It's not like KSU was a Big12 juggernaut historically. He took an average school and left it much better than how he found it.

From Reddit thread....

Who thought hiring Bruce Weber was a good idea in the first place? That guy was a whining joke at Illinois.

Currie

From Knoxvile Rag:

He, Currie, was promoted to associate athletics director for development at UT in 2002. At UT, Currie managed the coaching search that resulted in the hiring of Bruce Pearl in 2005. He also helped lead the search for UT baseball coach Todd Raleigh and football coach Lane Kiffin.

Hmmm - at least I loved ONE of those hires!!

Is he an asshat? Yes, but Kiffin wasn't necessarily a bad hire.

"UT is required to give Hart 15 days notice to accelerate his retirement and place him on paid administrative leave. Hart's contract runs through September 20, 2018, with a base salary of $622,218 and total compensation topping $800,000."

Tennessee has hired John Currie as new athletic director
Pretty impressive resume' and a UT guy with prior experience in UT's AD. Maybe having AD experience and good performance at a P5 school got him the nod over Blackburn. Seems like a pretty solid hire, imo.

Haven't seen it posted anywhere, but has anyone heard what Peyton and/or Haslam think about this? I'm sure neither would say anything negative, but would be curious what they do say.

I have absolutely in no way bashed the the man but that is not the only knocks.
I raised serious questions pointing to my only concerns.

1. Has he ever fired anyone? It's a huge part of the job if you want your program to get better and not maintain. Whichever sport that is.

2. Has he ever made a successful hire?

The financial part of his resume looks great. Along with any negotiations and improvements to facilities. I just want to see our Sports being truly competitive for the top. Not just have a good and solid bottom line each year.
I'm not even sure they sell a foam finger for that.

Currie is a Wake Forest guy...Like Hamilton. He got his Master's at UT.

He was brought here under Hamilton, unlike Blackburn who was here putting his dues in prior.

Blackburn is family...Currie is not.

I hope he does well. Blackburn will, wherever he lands. Maybe he stays at UTC, but more likely he winds up at a P5, hopefully not SEC, program very soon.

No that's not true. Currie was here before Hamilton

32 would be in range that should know. But for the sake of making you feel good I'll say 32 is young. :)

Admittedly I was surprised, but the more I hear and the more I read the better it sounds. They kept the insiders from having to take sides on the PF/DB lines and still hired a young up and coming UT raised guy. The hire turned out to be well done too with no body expecting it at all and no leaks so we need to give props to Davenport for getting the job done.

Since they are on the search committee, I am sure they met with Davenport. Ask her.

wasn't Blackburn part of the Hamilton regime?

90% of the people complaining about Blackburn not being hired did not know that little fact. I guarantee you. I would go so far as to say, 90% of the people complaining about this hire and the fact that Blackburn didn't get hired, don't know anything about David Blackburn other than his name and what they have read on here....which oddly enough, prior to today, no one ever mentioned he worked for Hamilton.

I will open with, it's women's basketball, I know. However:

Winningest head coach in program history, relieved of her duties in 2014. Replacement improved on her record the next season and has had a better record each year since.

You obviously missed the part where he had to fly out to meet with NCAA investigators for violations he committed while at Tennessee. Don't put in for VN historian.
and Bruce didn't? Wait, they came to him.

I stand corrected...I was misinformed on that. Thanks.

Whats your definition of a UT guy and honestly, what difference does it make? Do you honestly believe a person is not capable of doing a job because they dont fit some ficitious defintion?

Thank you, that gives me somewhere to start.
I don't mind if it's women's basketball, I just honestly couldn't find out if he had done any hiring and firing - which is what I care most about.
