John Currie introductory press conference discussion thread

Not an impressive hire imo. People talk power 5 school but what has he done in relation to coaching hires?

Rehired Snyder, hired Weber and upgraded the WBB program with Jeff Mittie.

Lol, thought the same thing last night.

I do believe I read somewhere here, that Butch wasn't happy about this hire. Don't know if it was just speculation or not, or if it really matters. :dunno:

As someone who advocates Butch getting a fair timetable, I recognize that Currie's interpretation of such might be vastly different.

Toss everything I've ever said out the window then...I quit.

Haha. Not at all Butchna, just saying. Currie has some demonstrated strengths in administration, fundraising, capital improvements for sure. I just think we don't really know about his ability to hire great coaches.

Would've been more secure with Blackburn or Fulmer imo. Currie won't be shy to make a change.

Thanks for dumbing it down for me. Read about 10 times and just wasn't sure.

Yea, I can see that too. I guess we all have our own idea about when "it's time" to make the change, I just hope whenever it is, most of us feel really good about the replacement. I'd like to think everyone feels the same, but I hope we all have reason to want Butch to stay for a while. Undermean what I stand?

Coach Matthews saying that Charlie Anderson was the only search committee member that voted for Fulmer. Peyton vote for Blackburn?

I just don't know. I sure wish I did. None of it makes sense to me, and I know, I'm easily confused. The following quotes are mostly why I can't figure out about Peyton's involvement....

From Hubbs....

Some committee members weren't caught up to speed, only learned of hiring of Currie yesterday morning. Some were kept out of the loop. (Peyton?)

From Jimmy Hyams...

Tennessee’s AD search committee did interview John Currie, though not all members of committee were there. (Peyton?)

Fulmer got a call from a search committee member Monday morning, leading Fulmer to believe he had the job. (Peyton?)

The search committee recommended Currie to Davenport, although the vote was not unanimous. (Peyton?)

Not all members of the search committee were aware that Currie was instrumental in having Fulmer fired in 2008 and didn’t know Currie and Fulmer have a strained relationship. (How could anyone not be aware? Peyton?)

I'm not normally a conspiracy theorists, but this has my curiosity peaking.

In the press conference, Davenport said she was told if things start to go sour, just say you love Peyton Manning. She said it.

Conspiracy theory. :)

Could a lot of this been planned by Haslam, to not let Peyton be involved in it? Knowing that he wouldn't cause a "stink" and would handle it professionally?

According to Mathews, Charlie Anderson was the ONLY Fulmer advocate and the ONLY search committee member left out of the loop. Imho, with the way Doug said it and how many times he said it, he was making it clear that Peyton was fully behind/for Currie's hiring. The only thing he said toward the end of his segment about all of this, is that perhaps Peyton was the only one not aware of just how involved/instrumental (and nasty) Currie was, flying around the country and state of Tennessee, to secure support for Fulmer being fired in 2008.

Obviously Mathews knows an Ocean more than I do, but I'm just not sold on Anderson being the only one left out of the loop. I just find that hard to believe, but most of this is hard for me to believe. Haha.

I'm also not so sure that Peyton was really behind Phil as the AD, as much as wanting Blackburn thinking/knowing he would have involved Phil in some capacity.

Not saying I'm right, probably not, I just haven't seen, heard or read that "one thing" that makes me say "okay, now that makes sense".
