John Chavis

No. Notre Dame scored 42 against us in '05. I don't think 32 were against units other than the defense.

My mistake. I was recalling the 2004 game. I do believe in 2005 that 14 points came from special teams and an interception return. Regardless, not a great performance for that defense.

Of course, the Vanderbilt effort is inexcusable, regardless of who the Dores had at QB.

Here are the things I think John Chavis does badly:

1. Defend tight ends. It's like he doesn't realize they are eligible receivers. See Ben Watson.

2. Defend scrambling quarterbacks. It's like he's never heard of a spy. See Matt Mauck or Matt Jones.

3. Shut down a team's primary receiver. It's like he can't figure out one man is catching 80% of the passes. See Earl Bennett, DJ Hall (three times), Sydney Rice, or many others.

IMO it's bad coaching when you have two QB's in a row that can't throw a pass downfield for more than 10 yards accurately and you coach your defensive backfield to play 12 yards off the ball. We made Wilson and Mitchell look like Favre and Elway and Hall and McKinley look like Rice and Owens with simple ten yard dump off passes. In addition to playing to their strengths you do not allow yourself to pressure the QB when you leave their WR's and TE's wide open 8 yards off the ball. If I can see it, I do not see how they cannot make these adjustments. Our defenseive scheme is 'play scared' and don't give up a big play. I think we have the talent to win every game with a 21 point lead in the second half regardless of whether we have the studs we had back when or not. That's my rant for the moment anyway.

I have to agree with stud on this one. How can any db cover a receiver when he is 15 yds off the line of scrimmage and backpeddling 2 seconds before the ball is snapped? Sometimes I wonder how Slade coaches these guys to cover receivers when playing man to man. My best guess is that he tells them to run behind the guy and when he turns to catch the ball, throw your hands up and wave like a wild banshee. We have some of the worst techniques that I have ever seen from DB'S. I honestly don't know how Slade has kept his job this long. As for Chavis, he is one of the worst coaches at making adjustments that I have ever seen. I think that he is so stubborn that he won't make the adjustments in the middle of a game. He has gotten his name over the years by simply having so much talent out there that it's hard not to look good. Maybe if Fulmer goes after this year, the rest will be gone too.Does anyone out there really think that we can hold Arkansas to under 300 yards rushing. i guarantee you that we will make Casey Dick a heisman candidate and Arky's defense will look like the 85 bears when they play us. And BTW, we have plenty of talent on the field to be 7-1 right now. It's coaching that holds us down. If Saban would have had 1/4 of the talent that Fulmer had when we played them, he still would have won. Fulmer is the worst coach in the SEC!!!!!

I only wish he would blitz more often. It's obvious some qb's are allowed way too much time making reads and allowed to pick us apart at will.

If fulmer gets a contract extension, hopefully he gets rid of chavis and cutcliffe soon!
