Currie/Davenport/DiPietro are getting another lifeline with this rejection. If we were going to offer Gundy $7 million/year plus paying his buyout, then there is no reason whatsoever that we can't go and land a better coach than Dave Doeren.
I feel a bit bad for Dave Doeren as he unfortunately got caught in the crosshairs of this dumpster fire, but this is not the situation for him to walk into.
He's a reasonably good coach, but there's no way, no how the University of Tennessee can hire a guy who has turned a middle-of-the-pack ACC team into ... a middle-of-the-pack ACC team. Not when Tee Martin is out there. Not when Mike Leach is supposedly interested. Doeren is not a bad guy or a bad coach, but he's certainly not the guy to walk in and win over a fanbase in open revolt against the Administration. Fans would not show up to games, he wouldn't be able to recruit, and he'd be set up to fail.
I have an inside source at the very highest level who says this is all a ruse. Doeren will actually accept the job but at the introduction press conference he will pull off his Doeren mask and it will actually be....
Sorry, I can't reveal that, you'll have to wait and see. But you'll be happy, trust me. Oh, you'll be very, very happy.
