John Adams: why we shouldn’t schedule Oklahoma in 2020

Gotta love it when fans talk about the game passing by a coach without realizing themselves that the national championship nonsense completely perverted the game - zero in the loss column is all that matters - even a loss against Bama or whoever doesn't cancel a non-zero in the loss column. The SEC was a little late in figuring it out, but we've adopted the model now, too - for good reason. It's no longer about good games; it's all about a zero in the loss column when the season is over.

False.

Bama hasn't been undefeated any season this decade, but have 4 titles in that time.

Only recent undefeated champion was FSU in 2013.

I’m fine with it as long as it’s early in the season. A late season loss can knock you out of the playoffs (which is a stretch to discuss about Vols right now anyway) but an early season loss is typically forgotten. Sometimes it’s even praised because the loser “improves” over the season after the loss.

Did it go over your head that if no one has a zip in the loss column that it equalizes the issue and moves to two or more losses that matter.

Truth of the matter is if you have zero losses from a power 5 conference, you are almost assured of being in the playoff. I cannot imagine zero loss team not making it. If you made it it undefeated to the playoffs, you should have beaten at least 2-3 teams that were good, maybe even close to playoff worthiness themselves.

However, going undefeated is really, really hard, no matter the schedule. So, that being said, one loss is much more the rule than no loss. If a team plays a conference schedule plus a tough out of conference team, they have a much more likely chance of making the playoffs than a one loss team that played nobody out of conference.

History is what makes this so, not opinion.

Now, schedule how you want to because the committee is going to decide anyway.

We shouldn't. There is no good that can come from it, the SEC schedule is hard enough. We need to schedule 4 cupcakes every year. The traditionalists who like to beat their chest about playing great opponents are delusional. You cannot win a national championship playing 10-12 difficult games a year I don't care how much talent you have. It makes no sense scheduling a tough OOC opponent and does UT no favors.

Congratulations on winning the POTY award.

There is no reason to avoid playing any Power Five team. No rational human expects TN to win, so the occasional miracle just gains additional luster. Play them as many times as the rules allow.

We’re talking 3 seasons away. I’d say we’ll be competing for a playoff spot by then. Yes, I think Pruitt is the savior of UT football and will dominate very soon.

I don't like this attitude. Schedule anybody, any day, anywhere. This is something we are known for (Oregon, Oklahoma, UCLA, Notre Dame, Miami, Cal, Virginia Tech, etc.)

Worst case scenario: we are still fumbling around, trying to make a bowl game. At that point what does it matter, at least it is a game for the fans to be happy during the Vol Walk.

Best case scenario: After consecutive top ten recruiting classes and a solid 2019 season of ten wins, we are on the edge of dark horse playoff contenders, ready to resume our role as peer competitors of Bama. The game has national championship implications and is a hot bed for recruits.

Did you know we had games scheduled in Knoxville this coming year and in Columbus in 2019 with OH State? GA had the same deal in '20 and '21. OH State cancelled both series. With the time it takes to schedule major teams, cancellations leave a void that generally gets filled with much lesser competition.

I think in both cases OH State blamed the nine game Big 10 schedule without that mentioning teams like Rutgers and IL are generally easier than good OOC competition.

I didn't know that, wish we played Ohio for the home and home.

Lame on the nine game conference schedule of the Big Ten for being the cancellation reason. Their bottom tier is dreadful.

He makes an obvious point. Duh, UT plays a tough schedule and it’s not to our advantage to play other blue bloods. But guess what? They’re on the schedule and there’s nothing we can do about it so sack up, John.

He also holds Tennessee to a standard that does not exist.

2014 Ohio State lost its home opener badly to a mediocre Virginia Tech and was back in the mix for a title by November despite playing absolutely no one of consequence.

Bama in two recent instances could not even win their division in the SEC West but was still given a red carpet to play for a title.

But if the Vols lose an away opener in a tough venue, then we are supposed to tear down Neyland and set it afloat on garbage barges down the Tennessee River?

Nah, we won't get back to being the most-feared jersey in college football by hiding in the corner of the cafeteria away from the bullies. If we catch a beat down here and there, so what. As long as we walk right up to these guys and bloody a nose or two in the meantime, then we will be in a better place for the next fight.

Adams is just a whiner and a complainer, quite frankly he knows very little about football or being a good journalist for that matter. GBO!

Adams is gonna Adams, stir stuff up. I don't take anything he says seriously.
As for scheduling teams, you really need quality opponents to help build your reputation as a great team. I say keep getting the best teams on the schedule year in and year out.

If we are not competitive by year 3 we have the wrong coach. I am not saying we will beat ok/ala/ga. We better be giving them a struggle at least.
